✅    Italy failed a tough test.  Spain won the UEFA EURO 2024, sadly, thanks to the own goal by Riccardo Calafiori, on Thursday 20 June 2024 at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Spain therefore already has the pass in their pocket for the Round of 16, while Italy will have to earn qualification in the last match of group B against Croatia. Even a draw will be enough for the Azzurri, but with a decidedly different performance.

This was the 11th match between Spain and Italy in a major international tournament (eight at the European Championships and three at the World Cup), a record between two European teams.

It was the most awaited match. Yet, Italy failed. It is the match that has been played the most times (11) in the history of the European Championships and the World Cup. It’s Italy-Spain again: a match with a double meaning because the first match point to qualify for the round of 16 and the lead in group B are already up for grabs. Luciano Spalletti’s Azzurri are coming off a 2-1 victory in debut against Albania, while Spain with a round success (3-0) against Croatia.

The UEFA EURO 2024 Group B Standing shows Spain in the 1st position with 6 points and a positive goal difference of +4.  Italy in the 2nd position with 3 points and a goal difference of “0”. Albania in the 3rd position with 1 point and a negative goal difference of -1. Croatia in the 4th position also with 1 point and a negative goal difference of -3.

🇪🇸 No Serie A players in Spain’s EURO 2024 squad

Head Coach: 🇪🇸 Luis de la Fuente

Oh my gosh, mamma mia! Are you kidding me? Italy conceded an own goal giving the lead to Spain. The own goal is scored by Riccardo Calafiori. The action started with a cross in the left hand side of Nico Williams, open the front of the Morata side, Donnarumma deviates from the shrimp of Calafiori to the back of the goalkeeper. OUCH.

✅  Stats before the game:  This is also the fifth consecutive edition in which the two teams have met at the European Championship (since 2008) – again this is a record. Excluding the penalty shootout lottery, Italy has lost only one of the 10 matches against Spain between the European Championships and the World Cup (W4, D5): the EURO 2012 final (0-4). Spain has won the last two matches played against Italy, both in the Nations League. The Red Furies have never achieved three successes in a row against the Azzurri. Spain have won all three previous meetings against the reigning European Championship champions, reaching the final in each of the editions in which they found success: 2-1 against the Soviet Union in 1964, 1-0 against Germany West in 1984 and 2-1 against Greece in 2008.  Italy has remained unbeaten in their last 10 matches at the UEFA European Championships (7W 3D); the first match of this series was the 2-0 victory over Spain at EURO 2016. The Azzurri’s last defeat in the competition came against Ireland in the last group stage match of 2016, having already reached the qualification.
