✅    Croatia and Italy ended the UEFA EURO 2024 Group Stage Group B game with a draw on Monday 24 June at the Leipzig Stadium in Leipzig, Germany.  Italy battled until the end, and literally got the qualification to the Round of 16 in the 98th minute with the equalizer goal by Mattia Zaccagni. At the last breath, when only the most optimists believed in a miracle. Zaccagni finds the magic touch that gives Italy the second place of the group and the transition to the round of 16.  Definitely, a great moment for Zaccagni to score his first goal with the Italian team to give Italy the qualification. I cried and jumped celebrating this goal, ITALIAAAAAA, thanks Zaccagni!

This will be the third meeting between Croatia and Italy in a major international tournament and for the third time, it will be in the group stage. Croatia won 2-1 in the 2002 World Cup, before drawing 1-1 at EURO 2012. Italy is coming off a 1-0 defeat against Spain, a match in which they recorded their lowest record of shots in a European Championship match since this data became available (four). The Azzurri have never lost two consecutive matches at the European Championships.

The UEFA EURO 2024 Group B Standing shows Spain in the 1st position with 9 points and a positive goal difference of +5.  Italy in the 2nd position with 4 points and a goal difference of “0”. Croatia in the 3rd position with 2 point and a negative goal difference of -3. Albania in the 4th position also with 1 point and a negative goal difference of -2.

 🇭🇷  Serie A and Serie B Players with Croatia’s EURO 2024 squad

  • Defender Martin Erlić (Sassuolo) listed among substitutes
  • Defender Marin Pongračić (Lecce) 78′ minute yellow card, played all 90 minutes
  • Midfielder Mario Pašalić (Atalanta) played the first 45 minutes and was replaced by Ante Budimir.
  • Midfielder Nikola Vlašić (Torino) had to leave from June 18  the national team camp and miss the remainder of the European Championship in Germany due to a muscle injury during training.

What a rollercoaster.  In the 52nd minute, Italy conceded a penalty following Davide Frattesi handball inside the penalty area. It is Luka Modric to take the penalty spot while goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saved the penalty in the bottom right corner.

The bad news is that Luka Modrid, just few minutes after his failed penalty, he gave Croatia the lead in the 55th minute.  Modric defeated goalkeeper Donnarumma from very close range with a left footed shot to the top left corner.

An agonizing ending with a ray of hope. Italy equalized in the 98th minute. Mattia Zaccagni defeated Croatia goalkeeper with a right footed shot to the top right corner. The assist is by Riccardo Calafiori.

✅  Stats before the game: Since gaining independence in the early 1990s, Croatia has remained unbeaten in the eight matches played against Italy (W3, D5). Notably, all the last three matches have ended 1-1. For the fifth time Croatia will find itself challenging the reigning national champions in a European Championship match and for the fifth time it will happen in the group stage. Previously, they beat Denmark 3-0 in 1996, drew 2-2 with France in 2004, lost 1-0 to Spain in 2012 and beat the Spanish 2-1 in 2016. Since the group stage was introduced in 1980, Italy have lost their final group match in only one of their nine European Championship appearances (W6, D2), a 1-0 defeat to Ireland in 2016 . So far Croatia have conceded five goals in the two group stage matches of EURO 2024, only on two occasions have they conceded more goals in a single group stage of a major international tournament: six at EURO 2004 and six in the 2014 World Cup. Croatia has not yet found success at EURO 2024 (1N, 1P), the last time they finished a group stage of a major international tournament without a win was in the 2006 World Cup (2N, 1P). The Croatians have won their last group match in three of their last four major international tournaments (N1) since losing to Mexico 3-1 at the 2014 World Cup.
