Hello my friends and welcome to the Italian Serie A 2013 - 2014 Season!  Yep, We are back with the Italian Football League.  This is the first Serie A Preview for Week1 games on Saturday 24  and Sunday 25 August 2013, Matchday 1.   I will be posting the Serie A Previews every Thursday.  Let's refresh a bit and let me grab my cup of coffee because it's our personal meeting to talk about Serie A games, grab your cup of coffee or tea.  Current Italy Champions are Juventus winning the 2012 - 2013 Scudetto.   Top scorer of past season was Napoli forward Edinson Cavani with 29 goals, and now transferred to Paris Saint Germain.

The three teams that were promoted from Serie B to Serie A are Hellas Verona, Livorno, and Sassuolo.   The three teams that were relegated to Serie B are Palermo, AC Siena, and Pescara.  It's sad to see Palermo out of the big picture, but their promise is to get back to Serie A next season while they have hired the ex AC Milan player Gennaro Gattuso as coach.

The two teams who qualified directly to the 2013 - 2014 Champions League are Juventus and Napoli.  AC Milan are playing the playoff to qualify.

The two teams qualifying for the 2013 - 2014 Europa League are Fiorentina and Udinese.

HELLAS  VERONA – AC MILAN
Referee: CALVARESE
Assistants:  COSTANZO – LA ROCCA
Fourth Official: MANGANELLI
ADD1: ROCCHI
ADD2: TAGLIAVENTO
18:00

This is an important game for different reasons.  It's the first game of the 2013 - 2014 Serie A season.  Moreover, it is also the  first game of Hellas Verona in Serie A after being promoted from Serie B ending in the second position behind Sassuolo.   Verona had to wait 10 years to return to Serie A.  AC Milan will also play their 4,000th officially competitive game.  AC Milan must win this game to game momentum after the draw against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League Playoff on Tuesday 20 August.  PSV Eindhoven 1 - 1 AC Milan.      Hellas Verona energized for the game against the Rossoneri after defeating Palermo in the Coppa Italia Third Round.

For Hellas Verona a draw might be like a victory, but a draw for Milan might be like a defeat.  Ideally, Allegri will target for the victory to claim the first 3 full points.  No matter the result, you bet Hellas Verona will celebrate their first game in the Serie A after waiting 10 years to battle among the top  Italian teams.

Hellas Verona coach Andrea Mandorlini and AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri will play their first official game against each other.  Stats in the 28 games played in Verona are even:
8 wins Hellas Verona
12 draws
8 wins AC Milan

Highlight also is to see AC Milan forward Mario Balotelli will start the season in Serie A  for the first time since the 2009-2010 season four years ago when he was playing with Inter.

Interesting detail there have been a number of Milan players from the past who have played for Verona: Cristian Brocchi (1998-99 and 1999-00, then Milan 2001-02 and 2004-05 and 2006-07, 2007-08), Massimo Oddo (2000-01 and 2001-02, Milan 2006-07 and 2007-08 and 2009-10, 2010-11), Egidio Calloni (Milan 1974-75 and 1977-78, Verona 1978-79). Giuseppe Galderisi (Milan 1986-87, Verona from 1983 to 1986, 1988-89).

Inter starting the season with new coach Walter Mazzarri who repalced  coach Andrea Stramaccioni.  For Inter, the objective is clear, to qualify at least for Europa League next season.  It's an uphill battle for the nerazzurri remaining this season as "observants."  Inter are not participating neither in Champions League nor Europa League.

It's an open challenge for Mazzarri and Liverani.  Surely, a victory or a draw for Genoa will be a good start for the neo coach.

This is a redemption star.  A redemption moment for Lazio after losing the Supercoppa Italiana against Juventus and for Udinese after losing the Europa League playoff against Slovan Leberec.

There is the special campaign from Lazio against racism.  Lazio will send the clear message against racism during the game. Lazio players will wear a special jersey saying "No Racism"  The Curva Nord at the Stadium will stay shut after the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) rejected the Lazio's appeal against the one-game closure. Lazio were giving this punishment after fans racially abusing Juventus players during the Supercoppa Italiana on August 18.

And guess who arrived in Parma this season?  Yep, the ex Sampdoria, ex Real Madrid, ex AC Milan and ex Inter player forward Antonio Cassano!    Coach Roberto Donadoni has the task not only to reform or see Cassano reaching top fitness, but also his character.    Ideally, we might see the new attacking duo Amauri and Cassano in action.
