I am personally sad to inform you that beloved Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro is retiring from professional playing football.  Cannavaro making the announcement  on July 9, 2011 after a chronic knee injury forced him to retire advised by doctors or risking worsening an injury.

Cannavaro, although 37 years old, wanted to continue play, "I'm very sad, football is everything to me".    For the moment, Cannavaro will remain on a technical adviser role in Al-Ahli the United Arab Emirates football club where he was playing.

Italian Soccer  Serie A  wishes Cannavaro success with his new project and thank him for the wonderful years he delighted us with his football.  My best memory from Cannavaro is when he "lifted the 2006 World Cup."   Cannavaro won the Ballon d'Or in 2006 following the glorious victory of the Italian National Football team.  Cannavaro also holds the record of being capped 136 times with the Italian national team  from 1997 to 2010 and scoring 2 goals.  Special achievement for Cannavaro is being  the only defender to have won the FIFA Player of the Year in 2006.

Cannavaro started his professional football career playing for Napoli from 1992 to 1995,  transferring to Parma staying 7 years 1995 to 2002 and winning two Coppa Italias and the 1999 UEFA Cup.  After Parma, Cannavro joined Inter from 2002 to 2004 transferring to  Juventus, Real Madrid, and returning to Juventus  from 2009 to 2010 to finally transfer to his last club Al Ahli on June 2, 2010.

Grazie Cannavaro.
