Stephen Appiah
of Cesena was quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport about his roots in Accra, Ghana:

"You can take a young man out of the ghetto, but the ghetto always remains inside you."

Rafael Benitez after the match with Tottenham Hotspur was quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport in the understatement of the year:

"With one-on-ones with Gareth Bale, we should have done better. We didn't and it was the difference. When he had space, it wasn't easy to stop him. Maicon did well in attack, but in the defensive phase, he had problems with Bale."

In my opinion, only a clone of Paolo Maldini and Usain Bolt could have kept up with Mr. Bale at White Hart Lane. What a tremendous individual performance against a great player such as Maicon.

Premier Silvio Berlusconi held out more than a handshake after last Saturday's match to Juventus legend, Alex Del Piero, quoted by Corriere dello Sport.

"I went into the changing rooms to congratulate everyone and above all, him. I told him that I knew that his contract was expiring and then I made him an offer to come here to Milan."

Hopefully, for Juventus fans, this will be an offer that Alex can refuse.

Jean-Claude Blanc of Juventus was quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport. Apparently, Claudio Ranieri selected Christian Poulsen instead of Xabi Alonso:

"We had two roads. Agreements were reached with the respective players and clubs. Not wanting to put our choice on Ranieri, we asked him to choose. It was he that decided to take Poulsen."

Claudio Ranieri reminded us of his imagined managerial legacy:

"Occhio a spingere per cambiare Ranieri. Occhio!

"Look to make a change to push out Ranieri. Look out! Because wherever I've been, I have always done better than my successor. And who followed me has always done worse."

Sky Sport 24 reminded us of the real managerial legacy of Mister Ranieri:

"Chelsea: 4 seasons, 0 titles won. His successor, Mourinho: 3 seasons, 2 titles won. At Cagliari, 3 seasons, one promotion to Serie A. His successor, Carlo Mazzone: 2 seasons, one UEFA Cup qualification. At Valencia, 2 seasons, 0 titles won. His successor, Hector Cuper: 2 seasons, 0 titles won but he had 2 consecutive Champions League finals."

Now we know why the English called him "The Tinkerman." And why during his last season at Chelsea, he said, "I'm just a dead man walking." Perhaps  he will join Mourinho's saints in managerial paradise.

Antonio Cassano was quoted by Corriere dello Sport on his latest difficulties with Sampdoria:

«Per farmi perdonare berrei petrolio».

"I would drink petroleum to be forgiven."

That quote reminded me of one from his time at Real Madrid after being banished by Fabio Capello:

"I would walk all the way back to Rome."

Sampdoria President, Riccardo Garrone, was quoted on the Cassano situation by La Gazzetta dello Sport:

"Gigi Del Neri was right when he told me: One day he will do with you what he did with Rosella Sensi and with the President of Real Madrid...

He had a blowup and I believe that it was fueled by him not remembering what he said... Antonio has recovered a great deal with us and has ended up being almost normal. If one can use this term. At the end of the day, he's a good and generous guy, but when he goes off..."

"Almost normal?" That's like being almost pregnant, almost broke, almost crazy, and, well, almost out of gasoline.

Rino Gattuso was his usual concise but eloquent self in La Gazzetta dello Sport:

"Mourinho ha santi in paradiso..."

"Jose' Mourniho has saints in paradise..."

But what does he have in Purgatory? Probably some guy that looks like Rino to remind Jose' that he isn't so Special after all.

Pippo Inzaghi was quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport on his historic night against Real Madrid:

"I had the  number 69 shirt ready for a long time. I dedicate this brace tonight to Italian players who are too often not treated well.Frequently, commentators forget about me. Now everyone will jump on the bandwagon. But it's fine like this. I promised the record to Stefano Borgonovo. I dedicate it to him."

Stefano Borgonovo sent an SMS to Pippo after the game according to the AC Milan website:

"Tu non sei umano".

"You are not human."

Jose' Mourinho was quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport before the UCL match with Milan:

"Ihope in the future to be lucky enough to play against Inter because Iwant to find a stadium full of Inter supporters. Meanwhile, tomorrow, itwill be full of Milan fans. With the Milan supporters it is obviousthat the rapport has been difficult because there is always a greatrivalry. But there has always been reciprocal respect, above all withthe players, staff and directors at Milan. Therefore, I will not begoing to play in 'the house of the enemy.' "

And after the match, "Lo Special One" explained his three-fingered gesture at the San Siro:

"Thethree fingers before the match were not for the Milan supporters, butfor those from Inter. From home, they could see their former manager whois still an Inter fan and not ever forget the three historic trophies."

Sorry, Jose', I'm not buying it. I noticed a few one-fingered salutes from the San Siro faithful. I think they weren't giving Jose' a warm Rossoneri welcome.

Azzurri boss, Cesare Prandelli, was quoted in Calciomercato.com about what happened in South Africa:

"I have never experienced this new challenge as an uncomfortable legacy. I firmly believe that the Azzurri didn't perform well at the last World Cup due to a full lack of respect by the whole country."

Was Mister Prandelli referring to those Padania radio commentators who cheered opposition goals during the World Cup? Such a practice prompted Daniele De Rossi to say:

"We'll cheer for Padania when they send a team to the World Cup."

Trivia

Speaking of translations, did you know that Jose' Mourinho began his football management career as an interpreter and translator for English manager, Sir Bobby Robson, at Porto and FC Barcelona? Robson recognized his potential and we know the rest of the story...
