AS Roma midfielder named Captain of the Italian National team for the friendly game Italy vs Ivory Coast on Tuesday, August 10, 2010. "I feel a special responsibility to be the captain, said De Rossi. Though, Italy head Coach Cesare Prandelli's vision is to have goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon as Captain but he is out injured. De Rossi knows that once the "senatori" return the armband will go either to Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo and Gianluca Zambrotta who have more appearances.
On Selection of Numbers and Sampdoria forward Antonio Cassano
Regarding the selection of the numbers Daniele Rossi commented that giving the Jersey number 10 to Sampdoria forward Antonio Cassano was not symbolic. "The Jersey 10 to Cassano does not have significant symbols. Moreover, for his characteristics he is ready to wear this jersey in the national team. We chose the numbers of the jersey based on appearances."
If we talk about appearances then, De Rossi should have picked the number because he has 57 appearances as opposed to Cassano who has only 15 appearances. However, like De Rossi explained, "It's obvious that I could not take the number 9 while a trequartista, a player like Cassano could easily take the 10."
De Rossi also commented about his relation with Cassano since he left Roma. "During the times with Roma, Totti, Antonio and I were very united. Later, there was some problem, but we have cleared it. Anyway, it was nothing serious directly with me. I have not particular problems with Cassano."

On calling up non-Italian born players to the Italian National team.
De Rossi commented that "the decision to call up non Italian players belongs just to the coach." This is obviously in response to the critics of the Lega Nord - an Italian political party - not happy with called ups of non Italian born players, in this case Amauri. "Two months ago nobody from the Lega rooted for us, on the contrary, they were more interested for Paraguay." De Rossi referring to the 2010 World Cup game Italy vs Paraguay.
