Gianluigi Buffon 2010  World Cup might be over.  It is  a sad news not only for Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, but also for the Italian National Soccer team. 

According to  the Italian National team doctor Professor Enrico Castellacci, Buffon is suffering from a back problem with  his sciatic nerve.

Buffon  was substituted in the 45th minute during the  first  2010 World Cup game  from Italy against  Paraguay ending in 1-1.  Cagliari goalkeeper Federico  Marchetti substituted Buffon.  Destiny marking an important   moment for Marchetti where he will to protect  the Italian National  team along his teammates defending the 2006 World Cup champion.


Gianlugi Buffon Back Injury Chronological situation

-  Buffon started to feel discomfort with his back during the warm up of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Group F  match Italy vs Paraguay on Monday, June 14, 2010.

-  Buffon taking a pause  during the warm up then went to the dressing room for a brief rest.  Apparently, he though it was a minor discomfort.  During these minutes, as precaution, Italy head coach  warned goalkeeper Federico Marchetti to warm up and be ready in case of replacing Buffon. Paraguay  scoring in the 39th minute with Antolin Alcaraz.

-  Buffon feeling better was included in the official starting lineup.

-  At the end of the first half, Buffon, Italy head coach Marcello Lippi  and national doctor Enrico Castellacci taking the decision  to  replace Buffon to prevent further damages.  However, the cold night air and wet weather in Cape Town further aggravated the sciatic nerve in his back.  Cagliari goalkeeper Federico Marchetti starts the second half without conceding goals.

-  After  the game, Buffon  optimistic saying he would  return in two days .

-  After the game, second goalkeeper  Federico Marchetti asked about the possibility  of replacing  Buffon and he said  that it is a big responsibility and that he  will  keep training to be ready. However, Marchetti  wishing Buffon to recover soon.

-  Tuesday, June 15, 2010 Buffon undergoing medical tests with the supervision on doctor Enrico Castellacci with a diagnosis  of back injury with his sciatic nerve.  Castellacci saying "no date could beset for [Buffon's] return."    Buffon  will be undergoing physiotherapy rather than training for the next games.

  “Buffon presenta un forte interessamento sciatico a sinistra. Inizieràimmediatamente la terapia medica e una fisioterapia adeguata, oltre agliopportuni esami strumentali. Al momento non è ipotizzabile una data dirientro, che verrà individuata in base alle condizioni clinichesoggettive”:
