It's time for one of the hottest derbies: THE MILAN DERBY / DERBY DELLA MADONNINA between AC Milan and FC Internazionale (Inter).  It is a derby to claim the bragging rights on who rules in the City of Milan.  It is called Derby della Madonnina in honor of the Virgin Mary statue found on top of Milan's DUOMO / cathedral which  could be observerd almost from everywhere in town and it is a city main attraction.

Forza Italia - Rise & Fall of Italian Football Book

Historically, AC MILAN is the original city team founded on December 16, 1899 by Herbert Kilpin, Alfred Edwards, who was a former British Vice Consul in Milan, and four other Englishmen, at that time established as "Milan Cricket and Football Club."  Edwards, who became the first President,  enrolled the team in the Italian Football Federation the following January. Kilpin became the first AC Milan captain.

The cricket side led by Edward Berra and the football section  managed by David Allison.  The first headquarters were established at the 'Fiaschetteria Toscana' on Via Berchet in Milan.

By the way, the pronunciation of the club was kept in English "Milan"  in honor of the founders, instead of pronouncing the club in Italian "Milano"

Here is the historical fact about FC Internazionale.  Guys, Internazionale was founded only in 1908 as a group of "rebels" rebelled against AC Milan establishing "Football Club Internazionale Milano.".

The whole deal, argument, division  mainly for the signing of foreign players.  The original AC MILAN club was not much in favor of signing foreign players but keeping the squad more of a nationalistic club.  Well, this led to the split from a goup of members and they went ahead to form FC INTERNAZIONALE.. simple as that.    Also, the fist captain of FC Internazionale was Swiss players Hernst Manktl

- Colors of AC MILAN are RED AND BLACK known as "rossoneri."

- Colors of FC Internazionale are BLUE AND BLACK known as "neroazzurri."

The home stadium is the same for AC MILAN and FC INTERNAZIONALE, though referred by different names.  AC Milan fans call it SAN SIRO STADIUM, Inter fans call it Giuseppe Meazza.

By the way guys, it is mostly in the US where FC Internazioanle is  referred as "Inter Milan."

Although in the beginning AC Milan was to dominate the MIlan derby, especially on March 3, 1918 when they beat FC Internazionale with a historical 8-1. ouch!!!!!

Making the Milan Derby even more interesting is the current club ownerships..  Things get better...  Awesome!  Imagine that Italy Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is the owner of AC Milan.  Talking about politics in football.. hello, hello, hello, Berlusconi is a conservative leader while FC Internazionale owner Massimo Moratti is a center-left businessman.  AC Milan also identified by many as the team of the people while Internazionale as a team of the bourgeoisie.

It is no surprise why most of the Southern working class supports AC Milan. The concept of the "rich, la bourgeoisie" favoring Internazionale still remains.  However, I find this a bit ironical because Berlusconi is one of the richest men in Italy plus owner of the main TVs, publishing companies, and so on...

By the way, guys, since it is not a secret that I am an AC Milan fan. Let me tell you that my family background is precisely from Lago di Como, Lombardia only few minutes from Milan and I willingly and proudly chose to follow AC Milan instead of Internazionale.  Yet, in my blog  Italian Soccer Serie A  I cover extensively both Milan clubs as my passion is to  talk with my vistors about the Italian Serie A  where all 20 clubs are needed to make it work.

However, just as any other fan... of course, I go wild supporting AC Milan, la mia squadra del cuore,  just as you "my reader" will support your favorite team too.  Besides, this is a "fan based blog, and I am a fan too."

Most important is to understand that it is a football game, not a war.  So, I invite you to jump in MIlan or Inter bandwagon to cheer for your favorite team... let's talk about tit and keep the ball rolling...

Having said that..... from the 2 Milan clubs, it is AC MILAN to be the "most awarded International team, with 18 international trophies," like Boca Juniors.

Enough about history... let's talk now about the current 2009 - 2010 Serie A Season and the MILAN DERBY...

Here is the situation.AC Milan right now has 3 points after winning their first match AC SIENA 1 - 2 AC Milan.

FC Internazionale has only 1 point after a draw with newly promoted club BARI.
FC Inter 1 - 1 Bari

This is what might happen:

 1.  If AC Milan beat  FC Internazionale, Milan will have 6 points. It means that they will have a 5 point lead over Inter, which is not merely peanuts even at this early starge of the season.

 2. If FC Internazionale beat AC Milan, Inter will have 4 points and AC Milan will remain with 3 points, giving Inter the lead for 1 point over the Rossoneri.

 3. If AC Milan and FC Internazionale ends with a draw, Milan will have 4 points and Inter will have 2 points, still AC Milan will have a +2 points lead over Inter.

Bottom line guys, the MILAN DERBY can be decisive only if AC MILAN win the match because the pressure for FC Inter to close the 5 points gap will be heavy.

I will say that AC Milan and FC Internazionale face this Milan Derby "almost in the same level" wihthout their previous savior.  Kaka for AC Milan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Inter.  Both now gone and you bet they will follow the Milan Derby to see their ex teams. Kaka with Real Madrid and Ibrahimovic with Barcelona......

There might be a "coaching advantage" for Inter because Jose Mourinho has been already coaching Inter for 1 year and has more experience than new AC Milan coach Leonardo with his first job as coach.

Oh my gosh, guys, the "good old days" when Milan had coach Carlo Ancelotti, Captain Paolo Maldini, and Ronaldinho making his debut in a Milan DERBY scoring the only goal in the 36th minute.  No longer the ANCELOTTI - MANCINI duel, neither the ANCELOTTI - MOURINHO duel, but now it is LEONARDO - MOURINHO....
