PREVIEW for the 2009 - 2010 Serie A Week 1 - Italian Soccer Serie A First Round scheduled for Sunday, August 23, 2009.  Let me start by mentioning that it is an open challenge from 19 Serie A clubs against FC Inter the defending Italy's Champions winner of the 2008 - 2009 Scudetto.

FC Internazionale 2008 - 2009 Italy's Champions - Campioni d'Italia

BOLOGNA - FIORENTINA
Renato Dall'Ara Stadium
Watch online Bologna - Fiorentina

What a blow for Bologna!  Guys, Bologna  already eliminated from the 2009 - 2010 Coppa Italia by a Serie B team "Frosinone."  So, you bet they will want to redeem themselves in front of their fans by beating Fiorentina.  Though, this will not be that easy because Fiorentina also faces this match with a needed motivation to start the season well after losing the leadership in the UEFA Champions League against Sporting ending with a 2-2 draw.

Bologna barely saved themselves in the last round avoiding relegation. The hope is striker Marco Di Vaio ending as second top scorer along ex Genoa forward Diego Milito with 24 goals each.  However, Di Vaio is not fully recovered and today followed therapy instead of training with the group. The challenge is for Coach Giuseppe Papadopoulo to unveil a new Bologna.  Well, hello, hello, hello, this new Bologna might start with ex Fiorentina forward Osvaldo!!!!

It's the Derby dell'Apennino!!!!! Guys, Bologna and Fiorentina have met 57 times ending with 24 wins for Bologna and 20 draw.  Get this one guys, in the last 30 years Fiorentina has only won 3 times at the Renato Dall'Ara Stadium!!!!!!!  hey, hey, hey, you bet Osvaldo is counting the days, hours, and minutes for this game.

Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli -- who was the Coach of the Year  -- will want to continue his good record with LA VIOLA.  Qualifying for the UEFA Champions League!   This  season the competition will be tough with the projected comeback from AS Roma as one of the main contenders.

On paper, based on the stats, Bologna has better chance  to win.  Besides, Fiorentina have only 3 more days to prepare for the second round of the UEFA Champions League in the Artemio Franchi against Sporting de Portugal.  You bet Prandelli rather have his top players in shape and avoid injuries.

AC SIENA - AC MILAN
 Stadium
Watch online AC Siena - AC Milan

More famous for itsbi-annual horse race Il Palio, Siena have been enjoying themselves inSerie A. A lower league side for much of their history, Siena arebeginning their seventh consecutive season in the top flight. They'rehardly setting the division on fire but they do well enough. Their headcoach is Marco Giampaolo: he's one of the very few managers not new inpost.

Siena ended in 14th position with 44 points compared to the 74 points of AC Milan.  However, at this point we might say Milan is barely struggling to regroup and show a competitive squad after "the Ancelotti era."   Milan will have a test to pass and see whether they are bale to grab the 3 points from the men of coach Marco Giampaolo.

Bad news for Milan because forward Klaas Jan Huntelaar will miss the first match for disciplinary decision!

Yep!  Lega Calcio / Italian Football Federation announced that : "As foreseen by FIFA Regulation Article 12 concerning the status and international transfers of professional players, Lega Calcio announces the decision made by the Spanish Federation, by means of the Italian Federation, concerning Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, signed by AC Milan and being an effective member of the club since August 11, 2009, will have to be suspended for one Serie A championship game as decided by the Spanish disciplinary authorities".  Reason: Huntelaar, got ared card  in the last matchday of the Liga 2008/09 season

So, once again, the pressure will be for Ronaldinho to become the leader of  the squad as President Silvio Berlusconi envision it.   Milan cannot start with a false step. Though most think it is forward PATO who might be the key player this season for Milan and not Ronaldinho.  It' s too early to say and we still have to see Marco Borriello and Huntelaar in action.

As for Siena, there is only one suspended playerr: Emanuele Calaio.

It will be a big test also for goalkeeper Marco Storari finding himself now the starting goalkeeper because Christian Abbiati and Nelson Dida are injured while new goalkeeper Flavio Roma is waiting his chance.

Probable formation for AC SIENA: Curci, Rossettini, Ficagna, Brandao, Del Grosso, Vergassola, Codrea, Fini, Jarolim, Paolucci, and MACCARONE!!! Guys,  for me it is Maccarone the one who could make the difference.

Probable formation for AC MILAN: Marco Storari, Gianluca Zambrotta, Alessandro Nesta, Thiago Silva, Marek Jankulovski, Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo, Mathieu Flamini, Ronaldinho, Pato, and Filippo Inzaghi.

FC INTER - BARI
Giuseppe Meazza Stadium
Watch online FC Inter Milan - Bari

Oh my gosh!!!!!  Will Goliath crush Bari?????   Guys, this is a match not to miss.  Technically, Inter the almighty is the favorite not only as defending Italy's champion but for the superiority of their players technically speaking.  Yet, it has proven that Inter -- as many of the big teams  - finds more problems to beat the so-called small teams.

Bari who were promoted from Italy Serie B will travel to the Giuseppe Meazza with their suitcases packed of hope to beat the giants.  A fact is that FC Inter coach Jose Mourinho will not contemplate a defeat but a victory.  It's the moment of the "INTER AFTER IBRAHIMOVIC" and start afresh with the new leaders forwards Samuel Eto'o and ex Genoa Diego Milito.  Big problem in the midfield with the serious injury from Esteban Cambiasso who underwent surgery.  Yet, Inter has one key player "goalkeeper Julio Cesar" proven to be a solid wall.

Inter will try to start with a victory at the Meazza after losing the 2009 Italian Super Cup in Beijing, a defeat not easily digested by Mourinho.

Probable formation for FC INTER: Julio Cesar, Maicon, Lucio, Cristian Chivu, Javier Zanetti, Sulley Muntari, Patrick Vieira, Thiago Motta, Dejan Stankovic, Samuel Eto'o, and Diego Milito

Probable formation for BARI: Gillet, Masiello, Ranocchia, Stellini, Parisi, Alvarez, De vezze, Gazzi, Koman, Sfornzini, and Kutuzov.

The last 2 home games of the Serie A a victory for Inter though 1 maybe unexpected defeat by many of Inter players against Lazio.

FC JUVENTUS - CHIEVO VERONA
Olimpico di Torino Stadium
Watch online FC Juventus - Chievo Verona

Juventus  is coming super motivated to this match after winning the 2009 TIM TROPHY  against Inter and Milan. However, in the last friendly game Juventus lost against AC Milan who by the way won their first  game of the pre season on Monday, August 18 winning   The Luigi Berlusconi Trophy AC MILAN 6 - 5 FC JUVENTUS
.
Talking about motivation?  Hello, guys, the latest support from Italy Head Coach Marcello Lippi  saying that Juventus would win the Scudetto this year was a super boost to the squad.

Juventus --on paper - technically superior to Chievo. Yet, nothing should be taken for granted.

Last 3 home games for FC JUVENTUS 1 win and 2 lost.

CATANIA - SAMPDORIA
Angelo Massimino  Stadium

Here we go with two teams having new coaches....  Walter Zenga left Catania to join Palermo while Luigi Del Neri left Atalanta to join Sampdoria.   Who will prove to be a better coach?  boh!  We will find out pretty soon....

Definitely, the duo to watch is CASSANO -  PAZZINI, a proven rocking  pair who might upset Catania.   As for Catania, it is Giuseppe Mascara the man to make the difference.

Catania will be training In Massannunziata CLOSED DOORS tomorrow Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. ...

Probable formation for CATANIA: Andujar, Sardo, Silvestre, Augustyn, Capuano, Izco, Carboni, Delvecchio, Martinez, Morimoto, and Mascara.

Probable formation for SAMPDORIA: Castellazzi, Stankevicius, Gastaldello, M. Rossi, ZIegler, Padalino, Palombo, Tissone, Semioli, Pazzini, and Antonio Cassano. Sampdoria is preparing this match carefully and the arrival of Semioli reinforces the sqaud from Coach Del Neri because he already knows Semioli since the times from Chievo.

GENOA - AS ROMA
Luigi Ferraris Stadium

It's time for redemption for the Roman gladiators who ended in 6th place last season far from their previous season where they battled for the Scudetto until the last match with FC Inter.

Point is that Roma has this season to get back in the UEFA Champions League instead of remaining in the Europa League where they are battling this season.

Advantage for both teams the added motivation after winning today their respective 2009 - 2010 UEFA Europa League for the Play offs.

GENOA: RESULTS UEFA Europa League Play Offs First Round GENOA 3 - 1 ODENSE BK Goals, by Emiliano Moretti, Luciano Figueroa and Rurik Gislason

ROMA: RESULTS 2009 - 2010 UEFA Europa League Play Offs First Round MFK KOSICE 3 - 3 AS ROMA Goals by Milinkovic, Francesco Totti, and Jeremy Menez "Totti showing Good Signs"

Guys, losing midfielder Alberto Aquilani was a real shame.  A true Roman gladiator practically forced to leave the team to join Liverpool.

Guys, the Roman gladiators lost their chance today in the UEFA Europa League game to grab the 3 points when they were winning against Kosice.  At the end, the match ends with a draw Good thing is that Captain Francesco Totti seems to be fit and playing well.  Totti scored  2 goals today.

I can't wait to see the Argentinians CRESPO - PALACIO wow, that is lethal weapon!    Crespo must be desperate to take advantage of every minute playing after being "a bench warmer" in Inter....

Genoa without their PRINCE DIEGO MILITO will have to see how they do this season.

Probable formation for GENOA:  Marco Amelia, Biava, Moretti, Bocchetti, Mesto, Kharja, Juric, Domenico Criscito, Sculli, Hernan Crespo, and Rodrigo Palacio.

Probable formation for AS ROMA: Artur, Motta, Andreolli, Juan, John Arne Riise, Daniele De Rossi, Pizarro, Taddei, Jeremy Menez, Guberti, and Francesco Totti.

Lazio is still on Cloud 9 after beating FC INTER in Beijing, China winning the 2009 Supercoppa Italiana!!!!!   An added boost to the morale of the squad is the victory today in the 2009 - 2010 UEFA Europa League for the play offs in the first round against IF Elfsborg.

RESULTS UEFA Europa League Play Offs First Round LAZIO 3 - 0 IF Elfsborg Goals by Kolarov, Mauro Zarate and Stefano Mauri , Thursday, August 20, 2009

The man of the moment, the hero is goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and you bet he is not in the mood to lose at home.

Wow, guys, Robert Acquafresca side by side with Cristiano Doni might be an explosive duo and might upset  Lazio.

AS LIVORNO - CAGLIARI
Armando Picchi Stadium

Will Cagliari continue their miracle this season?  Big question!

It is a different Cagliari without their star forward Robert Acquafresca who transferred to Atalanta.

LIvorno promoted from the Serie B will try to win this match in front of their fans.

The 3 home games for BOLOGNA  during this pre season are not that bad considering having 2 wins and 1 lost.

Bad, bad, bad news for Cagliari who were also eliminated from the 2009 - 2010 Coppa Italia by Triestina!!!!  It has been a bad pre season and best way is to start the season winning.   Question is whether they can make it or not.

Motivation is goalkeeper Federico Marchetti who has made an impact on Italy Head Coach Marcello Lippi calling him last time for the friendly game against Switzerland.

PALERMO - NAPOLI
Renzo Barbera  Stadium

Guys, here is an interesting match!   Former Italy Head coach Roberto Donadoni now coaching Napoli has not been able to find his competitive squad----yet.   Napoli struggling and with different problems in the dressing room and the still tense situation between forward Ezequiel Lavezzi and the management. Though, publicly, Lavezzi and Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentis made peace, is not like  totally resolved....

De Laurentis many times declaring that he already spent enough in transfer market for Napoli and at times not seeing the "supposedly good results."  Donadoni still wanted to get a midfielder, but De Laurentis not totally convinced...  oh well.....

As for Palermo, it is the debut in the Serie A with Palermo from ex Catania coach Walter Zenga!!!!   Yep, Zenga joining the fellow city rivals is like Ancelotti joining Inter, ouch!!!!   Now, Zenga is optimistic that his Palermo can even win the SCUDETTO. yep!  You are reading right.  So, let's see what the Spiderman Zenga has prepared in the first 5 games.

Here is the record FOR NAPOLI playing in Palermo.

22 Games from Serie A and 6 from the Coppa Italia.
10 victories for Palermo
13 draws
5   victories for Napoli
36 gols for Palermo
22 gols for Napoli

Last victory from Palermo:2-1 on February 8, 2009 with goals: 2’ Migliaccio (P), 14’ Simplicio (P), 43’  Hamsik (N)

Last draw in the Serie A: 0-0 on December 28, 1969.

Last victory from Napoli in Serie A 2-0 wth decision "a tavolino"  on March 16, 1969 (2-3 at 90')il 16 marzo 1969 (2-3 al 90’)

The records, the home stadium, the mood... everything sounds in favor of Palermo.. though we never know guys.  Maybe we will be celebrating with the COFFEE QUAGLIARELLA.....

- It's Quagliarella Napoli Mania "New Caffè QUAGLIA" in honor of Napoli forward Fabio Quagliarella .. have a coffee!

Probable formation for PALERMO:  Rubinho, Cassani, Simon Kjaer, Bovo, Federico Balzaretti, Nocerino, Fabio Simplicio, Mark Bresciano, Pastore, Cavani and Miccoli...

Probable formation for NAPOLI: De Sanctis, Campagnaro, Paolo Cannavaro, Contini, Christian Maggio, Walter Gargano, Luca Cigarini, Marek Hamsik, Zuniga, Fabio Quagliarella, and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

UDINESE - PARMA
Friuli Stadium

Udinese won't be the same without the famous TRIDENTE after forward Fabio Quagliarella moved to Napoli.  Now, coach Pasquale Marino will have to rearrange his formation and see whether he will keep the tridente formula or switched to a 4-4-2 or 4-3-1=2.  Wonder whether forward Antonio TOTO DI Natale will become a lone ranger or be as consistent as when he played along Quagliarella.

Anyway guys, Parma is back in the Serie A after they were relegated to the Serie B in teh 2008 - 2009 Season.

Here is the probable formation for UDINESE:  Handanovic, Zapata, Coda, Lukovic, Gokhan Inler, D'Agostino, Zimling, Pepe, Corradi, and Antonio TOTO Di Natale.

Here is the probable formation for PARMA: Mirante, Panucci, Paci, Lucarelli, Dellafiore, Morrone, Mariga, Galloppa, Castellini, Lanzafame, and PALOSCHI!

Guys, how I wish Paloschi return to AC Milan.  Well, we will see also ex Napoli player Lanzafame and the ex Roman gladiator Panucci too battling for Parma now.
