"If I do have any regrets it is that this was not the correct image of this team for the world to see," said Italy Head Coach Marcello Lippi after Brazil eliminated them with a 3-0 goleada in 8 minutes.
ItaliaCovering the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa from an Italian Perspective
Oh well, tough luck, Italy finished third in the 2009 Confederations Cup South Africa Group B with 3 points, losing 2 games, and the Azzurri already packing to return home humiliated and leaving a bad image of the national team which I hope THEY CHANGE SOON. Guys, it is time for Italy head Coach Marcello Lippi to make a conscious evaluation and look in the mirror to face the reality and take immediate measures to rebuild the Italian National team to the top level and cancel the "humiliated image left in the Confederations Cup." Last result: ITALY 0 - 3 BRAZIL Don't you think?

That I really enjoyed and you can see it in the opening of this video before Lippi talks. PRETORIA (South Africa), 22 June 2009 - Guys, here are the comments by Italy head coach Marcello Lippi a day after the elimination of the 2009 Confederatiosn Cup.
On the Rebuilding:
"This is a time for regeneration. If I hadn't left the national squad three years ago, we wouldn't be in this position, it would've have been the next stage in a cycle. I think 10-11 players from the past team may be important in the 2010 World Cup as well. More so because we still have to qualify. And they are key players. Regeneration takes time, a team's not a team with 20 new players."
STRATEGY IN AFRICA
"The Confederations Cup came up during this period of regeneration. We took the challenge seriously, but you can't compare it to the European Championships or World Cup. That's why I put together the kind of team that I did. For example, I let Gattuso play who's recovering from injury. He was important for the group. And there were loads of players here in South Africa who didn't play in Germany in 2006. Then there was the Under 21 situation as well: they needed to complete their cycle, and it wouldn't have been right to take Casiraghi out. And calling up Santon was something we agreed together. Rossi actually played three games, Santon would've played as well, but he got injured. In my mind, the players I brought here were the best. The Confederations Cup made things a bit clearer for me, I made up my mind on the "older" players and the "other" ones. Some things you can only really appreciate after high profile games like these. Why did I name the younger players? There are some Under 21s who are right for us, but personality still plays a huge part."
RETURNING HOME:
Disappointing "We played three very disappointing games, we expected to do better. We didn't do well at all. We're going home bitter, sorry and very disappointed. When I say that this doesn't change anything in relation to the plan we have, it's because the plan to rebuild the team is ongoing. I never said it was over. We didn't give a very good impression of ourselves, but we've done better in the past. And Brazil is the strongest team in the world after all. They are not an easy team to beat. Nevertheless, this is the hardest part of my time with the national squad."
Fitness
"I realized a lot of things, especially how important it is for us and our game to be athletically very fit, especially as regards injury. There's no doubt this team has fire and enthusiasm, we just need to find some other things. Pride isn't enough. Brazil dominated the last Confederations Cup, then went out of the World Cup at the knockout stage because they weren't really fit. The national league will finish earlier next year, so we will have more time to get ready."
Guys, point is that Lippi made a mistake ---without direspecting the level of Gennaro Gattuso and Luca Toni, but they were not fit enough to be in the starting line up while leaving for example Sampdoria forward Giampaolo Pazzini in Italy. Why not even calling young Sebastian Giovinco? Gattuso was recovering from injury and I am the first one to cheer for Gattuso but if he is not fit or any other player it is up to Lippi to judge before asking them to play. Hellooooooo Bottom line, guys, Lippi must face the consequences, period.
Technical crisis
"Is Italian football struggling? It's not nice to have to read every day that Kakà, Maicon, Ibrahimovic or whoever are, or may be leaving. It makes it look like there's a shake up in process. And now the national squad is going through a tough time. You can't win every competition. So am I worried? No, I'm not. If Pirlo goes to Chelsea, it won't change anything for the national squad, although for the Italian league it looks like a lowering of the technical standard. Is it a problem with renewal in mid-defence? It would be too easy to say Cannavaro isn't what he used to be. He had a physical problem here. As well as Cannavaro, we also have Chiellini, Legrottaglie and Gamberini plus the Under 21's."
Formation "We might think of changing something. But like I said before, you can only assess this after you've tried it out on field."
BRAZIL-SPAIN "It would be an evenly matched final."
