I am having a blast with all the follow ups from the Azzurri and checking La Gazzetta dello Sport, Il Corriere dello Sport, TuttoSport, the Italian Football Federation... so here are the declarations from Italy Head Coach Marcello Lippi on the eve of the 2010 World Cup Qualifier match ITALY - REPUBLIC OF IRELAND on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 in Bari, Italy.
Here is what's going on with the Italian National team today....

h. 10.30 Third day Italian National Training (open to the press)
at the end of the training, Press conference with Coach and players

Bari, Tuesday, March 31, 2009 - wow, guys, the Italian National team already in Bari for the 2010 World Cup Qualifier match ITALY -REPUBLIC OF IRELAND.
As expected, questions in Bari are surrounding the ommision from Sampdoria forward Antonio Cassano. Lippi responded: "I don't talk about Cassano."
Ironically, guys, Cassano seems more present in the National team as everybody talks about him starting from the journalists, fans, talk shows and even Coach Giovanni Trapattoni saying that "Cassano is a player to be in the National team."
Guys, Lippi evaded the topic of Cassano in the press conference by making reference that journalists from Ireland are not interested on Cassano but more on their match. Hey, that was a clever punch.
I think Trapattoni should have avoided also the topic considering that he is coaching the opposite team. Though, it might be part of his mental strategy?
ON BARI FANS - "I hope the fans cheer for the Nazionale tomorrow. How many are the tickets sold for tomorrow, 55,000? And how many will be the fans from Ireland, about 5,000? So, I expect the other 50,000 fans become the extra man for the Azzurri. Here in Bari, two years ago there was joy for the World Cup Champions just like in all Italy."
ON COACH GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI: "Compare Italy - Ireland to a match between David and Goliath? It is a coach with great experience, he knows how to motivate his players."
CONTE "Conte said that Cassano must do well and wait for his moment. Conte has been an important player in my Juventus. He has not been the only one with whom I had a strong moment. A good teams is made of players with great character."
ON IRELAND - "I am expecting great determination and pressing from Ireland. They have done a splendid round in this qualification. We must be careful on Doyle's head shots. The worth of a coach is to maximize the potential of his players. Trapattoni knows how to do this well. I don't know what will he invent tomorrow."
"I hope to win. Though, even if we win, it will not be a definitive step, important, yes, but not definitive."
