It is a super week for FC Internazionale flying all the way to the moon as "sole leaders" with a splashing advantage of 9 points ahead of Juventus and 11 from AC Milan. It means that Inter whether they win, draw, or lose the next two matches, they will continue as top leaders. Problem will start if Inter lose 3 matches because if Juve does not lose those matches, then, it will be a tight race for the Scudetto until the end of the Season.
This week there are 3 matches on
Saturday because Roma, Juventus, and FC Inter will be playing their
respective UEFA Champions League matches next week.
Here is my partial PREVIEW of the Italian Serie A Week 25 - Twenty Fifth Round on Saturday, February 21 and Sunday, February 22, 2009.
FC Inter 1st Position with 56points
FC Juventus 2nd position 47 points AC Milan 3rd position, 45 points
The
Champions League area: This week
the 4 teams in the Champions League spot are Inter, Juventus, AC Milan, and
Fiorentina.
Yet, the battle here will be for the 4th position. Fiorentina can keep the 4th position only if defeating Chievo Verona. If Fiorentina loses, Genoa can take the 4th position if they beat Napoli in the San Paolo Stadium because they will have 43 points while Fiorentina will remain with 42 points.
GF = Goals in favor, GA = Goals against, GD = Goal difference
The UEFA Cup area: Here is the most interesting aspect. Genoa and Roma are in the UEFA Cup spot area with 41 and 40 points respectively. Though, guys, a real TURNOVER could happen this week. Get this one... Cagliari who are in the 7th position with 37 points might even reach the UEFA Cup section if they beat AC Milan in San Siro and Siena beat Roma. Wow... just unbelievable!!!!!
A pancake flip flop can be a reality too. Roma who are in the 6th position with 40 points can also jump all the way to the 4th position if Fiorentina and Genoa lose their respective matches. Hello, hello, goal difference between Cagliari and Roma is in favor of Cagliari!!!! Yep! You are reading right. This is why Roma must defeat AC Siena to reach 43 points. If losing they will remain with 40 points and Cagliari can take the 4th spot. Roma has scored 36 goals, conceded 31 having a goal difference of +5. Cagliari has scored 32 goals, conceded 26, having a goal difference of +6. Judging by the numbers, does it mean that Cagliari has a better defense than the Roman gladiators????
Regarding Palermo - Juventus... the objective of Palermo is at least to grasp a spot in the UEFA Cup. Right now Palermo is in the 9th position, though a victory against Juventus can get them closer to their goal. The big question is whether Juvents will risk losing the match. Their dilemma is even harder than Inter because Inter can afford to lose a match for having 9 points difference. Juventus cannot lose but they also have to think on playing next week the UEFA Champions League against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge! Too many complications..... On top... ex Palermo star Amauri with the challenge to beat his ex team to help Juventus keep the race for the Scudetto.... Miccoli and Balzaretti the ex Juventini wanting to upset their ex team.... oh well... welcome to the rollercoaster......
The RELEGATION area: Technically, the 3 teams risking relegation are Torino, Chievo Verona, and Reggina. However, I will start with the 15th position in the "moving sands, the trembling way" to relegation. Sampdoria has been such a disappointment this season. Yesterday, Sampdoria lost at home the UEFA Cup Round of 32 match against Metalist! Come on, is not that Sampdoria is doing well in the Serie A either.
Bologna will host FC Inter and if losing this match they can down the tube if Lecce beats Lazio. The differences in points are not that many. Advantage for Bologna will be playing at home knowing at least they can count on the goals of forward Marco Di Vaio, the top scorer of the Serie A with 16 goals. You bet ex Assistant coach for Inter Sinisa Mihajlovic would love to beat Inter. Problem is whether Inter coach Jose Mourinho will be risking his top men: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, defender Maicon, and midfielder Dejan Stankovic to play the 90 minutes considering they will play next week the UEFA Champions League match against Manchester United. So, there are more chances for Bologna to grasp this victory at home.
The crying time will be for Reggina if they lose their match against Catania. Guys, come on, hello, knock, knock, anybody home???? If Reggina loses while and Torino and Chievo win their respective matches, it will be really difficult to save them. Reggina most likely will start packing to the Serie B with only 17 points.
