By Anna Italia

I was doing my follow up with AC Milan Official website and found this great article on "getting to know the opponents of Milan in the UEFA Cup."  I am including it, so we get to know our opponents.
The Dutch side of Herenveen, the Portuguese side of Sporting Braga, the English side of Portsmouth and the German side of Wolfsburg: these are the opponents of Milan in Group E of the 2008/09 Uefa Cup. Let’s get to know them!

AC Milan Coach Carlo Ancelotti "better think carefully to sketch a winning strategy."

The Dutch side of Herenveen, despite being a small club for the European standards, are considered the only side in Holland able to annoy the top three in the league: Feyenoord, PSV Eindhoven and Ajax. It’s not a coincidence that in the fifth matchday of the Eredivisie they defeated Marco Van Basten’s side 5-2.

The team coach by Trond Sollied, is currently fourth in the league with 10 points. Ahead of them there are Groningen (13 points), PSV Eindhoven (12) and NAC Breda (12). From the European level, the clash between Milan and Hereneveen is new. However, in the past Herenveen managed to qualify for the group phase of the Champions League. This happened in 2001, after qualifying second in the league the previous year, when despite finishing last, still managed to obtain a nice win against Olympiakos and a draw on the Valencia pitch.

SPORTING BRAGA

In the past years, Sporting Braga affirmed itself as one of the best clubs in Portugal, behind Porto, Benfica and Sporting Lisbon. After five matchday of the Portuguese league, Sporting Braga is eleventh in the standings with five points.  Porto is leading the standings with 11 points.

Curiosity: the squad nicknamed the Arsenal di Minho because in the 1930s the coach Jose Szabo, who had watched a game at Highbury, convinced the club the change the shirt colours from green to white-red. They play their home games at the Municipale stadium of Braga, built for the Euro 2004. In the squad, coached by Jorge Jesus, there are 9 Brazilian players. The most representative players are attacker Cesar Peixoto and defender Nuno Frechaut. They arrived in the Uefa Cup from the Intertoto.

They play at the Fratton Park stadium in the city of Portsmouth, in England. After seven matchdays of the English league the team is seventh with 12 points. In the Premier League, Chelsea and Liverpool are on top with 17 points.

Last year, in the 2007/08 season, they finished eight in the Premier League and won the FA Cup, beating Cardiff City in the final thanks to a goal by Kanu. From January 2006 the club is owned by Alksandre Gaydamak, French-Israelian from Russian family. He arrived at the club with the Serbian Milan Mandaric, but then remain the only owner, who increased the club’s ambitions. Amongst the most important players, coach by Harry Redknapp, there are the captain Sol Campbell, Lasana Diarra, Peter Crouch, Niko Kranjcar and Jermain Defoe.

WOLFSBURG

Wolfsburg was founded in 1945 and is currently in the Bundesliga, playing the home games at the Volkswagen-Arena of the same city. After seven matchdays of the German league, they are ninth in the league with 10 points. In the German Bundesliga, Hamburg are on top with 16 points.

In the 2005/06 season the team finished in 15th place, avoiding the relegation for just one point over Kaiserslautern, with whom it drew 2-2 at home in the last matchday. In the following year they managed to achieve survival in the last round again.

Coach by Felix Magath, former Bayern Munich coach, who has already met Milan, the team strengthened itself with the arrival of two Italian players, Cristian Zaccardo and Andrea Barzagli, both bought from Palermo and both winning defenders of the 2006 World Cup with the Italian national team.
