Italy Second Goalkeeper Marco Amelia Injured and out of the 2010 World Cup South Africa Qualifiers against Cyprus and Georgia

By Anna Italia

Although I have been questioning why Palermo goalkeeper Marco Amelia is considered the second goalkeeper of Italy while he had the worst season with Livorno ending up in relegation,  the news that he had to leave the Nazionale for injury makes me sad because he is family.

Moments of sickness are totally different than just being left out or ignored like the case of goalkeeper Marco Storari who last season had a better performance than Amelia and still was not called up by former coach Roberto Donadoni either.  Here we are talking about a goalkeeper doing the opposite of Amelia, Storari was saving Cagliari from relegation.

Anyway, that's past history.  Point is that Amelia had to abandon the training ground of the Italian National team in Coverciano when medical tests revealed that he had a slipped disc which was causing him back pain. This is not good news either for Palermo coach Stefano Colantuono.  Palermo is in desperate need to win the next match at home after losing against Udinese on Sunday. Udinese 3 - 1 Palermo.

At least Italy Head Coach Marcello Lippi found a quick solution and the third goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis of Galatasary will be the second goalkeeper in case there is an emergency with Italy and Juventus first goalkeeper "Saint goalkeeper Gigi Buffon."

Wow, considering that the match Cyprus - Italy is the first one for the 2010 World Cup South Africa qualifiers, Italy needs his top shots super fit like Buffon, Alessandro Del Piero, Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi, Gattuso.  On paper, Cyprus is "a piece of cake," but these small teams are the ones that cause more problems for their own motivation to prove the opposite. Italian players cannot take this match for granted, is not a passeggiata.

Good thing is that Amelia will have 1 week to recover and get treatment with Palermo Medical staff.  All the best to Amelia and we pray you get fit soon.
