Covering the 2010 World Cup South Africa Qualifiers from an Italian Perspective

While most of us were following the matches of the 2008 - 2009 Serie A Week 1, Italian Head Coach Marcello Lippi announced the 22 called up players to be part of the new adventure: Qualify for the 2010 World Cup and win again the World Cup.

Naturally, I checked the list to see from an objective perspective, but also as a fan.

I must say first surprise was not seeing among the called up players Sampdoria forward Antonio Cassano.

I am curious to know why Luca Toni yes, who was not scoring in Bayern Munich until today.  Controversies arise already as many say that Cassano deserved the called up better than Luca Toni if one compared the latest performances from both with the National team and with their respective clubs.

Another returning face is Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro, which I welcome gladly.  Absent from this list for injuries are AS Roma midfielder Simone Perrotta and Fiorentina midfielder Ricardo Montolivo.

The Azzurri will meet tomorrow by midnight at the Technical Center of Coverciano.  Trainings will start on Tuesday.

Friday afternoon the entire Italian National team and staff will go to Cyprus to be ready for the match on Saturday, September 6 and returning to Italy on Sunday, September 7 to gather in Gradisca d'Isonzo, the headquarters in Friuli,  to prepare for the second qualifying match against Georgia scheduled for Wednesday, Septemher 10.

Here are the 22 called up players by Italian Head Coach Marcello Lippi:

Goalkeepers:  Buffon (Juventus), Amelia (Palermo), De Sanctis (Galatasaray);

Defenders: Barzagli (Wolfsburg), Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Cassetti (Roma), Dossena (Liverpool), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Grosso (Olympique Lione), Legrottaglie (Juventus), Zambrotta (Milan);

Midfielders: Aquilani (Roma), Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Gattuso (Milan), Palombo (Sampdoria), Pirlo (Milan);

Forwards: Del Piero (Juventus), Di Natale (Udinese), Gilardino (Fiorentina), Iaquinta (Juventus), Toni (Bayern Monaco).

Juventus has 5 players in the Nazionale followed by AS Roma and AC Milan with 3, Fiorentina with 2, Sampdoria 1, Udinese 1.

Do you agree with the called up players, yes, no, and why?

Were you expecting for other players not on the list, who?

    Well, I to am upset that there is no Cassano. I don't understand why Toni is continously called up to the national team. In major tournaments, 11 games, he has scored 2 goals, not very good. As for Del Piero, I don't get it, he has never proven himself. His most important contribution to the Italian national team was a goal in the semi's against Germany, who had no body defending in the final dieing seconds of the game, and he was lucky enough to score. Against Fiorentina he missed an easy one-on-one to kill off the game...sorry for the long winded answer, Cassano yes, Del Piero and Toni no.
