Emergency in Italian National Olympics Team with Lazio Forward Tommaso Rocchi Injured and Replaced by Livorno midfielder Antonio Candreva

Covering the 2008 Summer Olympics Game in Beijing  from an Italian Perspective

Calm down everybody.  I know the injury of Lazio forward Tommaso Rocchi is a big loss not only for the Italian National Olympic Team but also for Lazio.  Being that Rocchi is the only over age of the groups creates a problem for Italy Coch Pierluigi Casiraghi.

Good thing is that the Italian Olympic Committee asked to be allowed for a replacement.  Italy is bringing Livorno midfielder Antonio Candreva to replace Rocch out for an injury to his fibula, a fracture.

China, 2008 Summer Olympics Beijing Men Football Group D - Here is the moment when Tommaso Rocchi celebrates his goal in the Olympics with the Italian National Olympic Team in the 31st minute.

Why we cannot be panicking?  Let me tell you, so far the Italian team are among the top favorites Brazil and Argentina winning convincingly and giving good football show with the great Sebastian Giovinco.  Italy has not conceded a goal yet -- KNOCK ON WOOD.  The least thing our players need right now is to panic and lose concentration.

When Rocchi did not play in the first match against Honduras, it was Cagliari striker Robert Acquadresca to replace him  with flying colors.  So, here is where I emphasize that although it is sad that we are losing Rocchi, it is also true that the Italian National Olympic team can rely on Acquafresca.

My point is that if Casiraghi knew Rocchi was struggling with injuries since the beginnig of the Olympics why forced him to play when he was not fit but just worsened his condition to the point of not continuing.

Here is where I agree with Lazio President Claudio Lotito on being upset because Casiraghi made him play.  It makes sense that if Casiraghi saw Rocchi's test and witnessed during trainings that Rocchi was struggling, why he risked him by adding him in the second match against South Korea? They did tests and saw that there were problems but  the diagnosis was taken as a muscular problem when in reality it was more serious. It was a fracture.

I am including this video of the match  Italy 3 - 0 South Korea  to say THANK YOU ROCCHI for your heart to defend the Azzurrini.  In this match Rocchi made the assist to Giuseppe Rossi's goal and scored himself  the second goal.

Yet, it is the same ROCCHI to clear any complaints towards Casiraghi.  Rocchi declared that "I chose to play, it was my decision." So, Lotito has nothing to say against the federation and the medical staff for having allowed Rocchi to play while injured.

I understand Rocchi's desire to continue playing because at his 30 years old, it was practically his last chance to be in the Olympics. He even declared that he avoided crying but now he will continue cheering for his teammates.  Rocchi will return to Italy after watching the match Italy-Cameroon.

Here is where the "Emergency crisis" starts developing for Casiraghi.  The next to be injured on the same day was Juventus midfielder Marchisio!  Good thing is that the newly Napoli player Andrea Russotto is coming to replace him.  In other words, we continue to see our youth battling to get the "gold medal."  This is also a positive aspect for Russotto to be a main player in the Olympics and show why is even called "the new  Roberto Baggio."

I will be worried if we lose another player --- God forbids we lose goalkeeper Viviano or the soul in the midfield Sebastian Giovinco!

Rocchi said that he continued experiencing pain. First he experience some problems on his right leg before Italy's debut against Honduras.

Even in pain he played the second match, during the match he continued experiencing pain and had to be substituted. There was the moment symbolizing the end of the Olympics for him.

Here is the chronological situation of Rocchi as reported by the Italian Newspaper "Il Corriere dello Sport."

August 6 -  The day before the debut of Italy against Hoduras, Rocchi injured during training when clashing with defender Ranocchia, on of the 4 reserves.

August 7 -   Rocchi experiences pain in the morning. Rocchi talked to the medical staff and to Casiraghi.  Rocchi cannot walk but because the opponent (Honduras) was in the same hotel the news of Rocchi not playing on the 7th was kept a secret. Casiraghi then opted to replace Rocchi with Acquafresca.

August 8
-  Roccki  trained sparately.

August 9
- After stetching and warm up, still feeling pain

August 10
-  Rocchi -still with pain - played in the second match Italy 3 - 0 and scored a goal.  Rocchi let Casiraghi know he as experiencing pain. Rocchi plays in the starting 11 match   Italy 3 - 0 South Korea scoring a goal too.

August 11 -
The team goes to Tianjin. Rocchi continues feelig pain.  Pain was  obvious and decides with Casraghi he will miss this match and Acquafresca to take his place.

August 12 -
Discover  he is really injured and will miss the rest of the Olympics.

What do you think of the whole "ROCCHI CASE?" Did Italy Coach Casiraghi took the right decision to include Rocchi in the second match knowing about his pain, yes, no, and why?
Let's get the ball rolling and have your say now.
