Marcello Lippi the New Italian Head Coach "Will Lippi Be Able to Win the World Cup Again?

By Anna Italia

Although there was not an official press conference to present Italy's new Head Coach, the Italian Federation (FIGC) announced in their website that Marcello Lippi is the new Italian Head Coach. Roberto Donadoni's era was over this afternoon after meeting with the President of the Italian Federation Giancarlo Abete.  Lippi's presentation will be on Tuesday, July 1, 2008.

'Marcello Lippi returns to guide the Italian national team. Figc president Giancarlo Abete nominated him the new national coach of the Azzurri in replacement of Roberto Donadoni. Lippi will be presented next Tuesday, on the 1st of July, in a press conference in Rome.'

The big question is whether Lippi would be able to form a strong Italy with quality football and win the World Cup again.

Certainly, Lippi has lot of work to do with an Italian team lacking sharpness and in desperate need of goals.  It's about time that Italy start showing why they are the 2006 World Cup Champions.

Do you think Lippi can do the miracle and win the World Cup again, yes, no, and why?

In the world of football anything is possible with hard work, dedication, and a little bit of luck.Italy can repeat Germany 06 if the right steps are taken and by the right steps I mean injecting some of the Azzurrini players who have proved themselves worthy of the Azzurri like Giovinco,Abate, and Osvaldo. With a good balance of experience and youth Italy if not able to defend the title could at least reach the final.

    Yes he can.
Although it would be a callenge this time because from now until 2010 he'll have to test "new" players. There won't be Inzaghi , Cassano Boriello Quagliarella. All forwards just getting into the National team, don't know Lippi that much yet.

Sub-21 midfielders will need to "break in" the national team and convince quick. Aquilani had an unfortunate match against Spain tis euro 2008. How will Montolivo do? De Rossi.

What's the criteria for the FIGC hiring lippi again? I mean, if they wanted a manager with experience and trophies, why in the world did they hire Donadoni? Please someone explain it to me. What made him more qualified than, let's say, former sub-21 manager Claudio Gentile?

Your question has been asked by almost all of us! There was no point on hiring Donadoni who had not had any experience with a national team. Even Claudio Gentile would have done a better job. I have more faith in Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo right now than on Aquilani.

No doubt about the Roman gladiator Daniele De Rossi. He missed that penalty against Spain but I think he deserves to be among the next called up players. He had a good match against France and like Donadoni mentioned "one penalty" cannot erase the good things that De Rossi has done.

Di Natale? Here I have my doubts as well as with Fabio Quagliarella. Both have to prove they deserve to be in the "Lippi Era."

If Inzaghi continues playing well and being in shape, I assure you that Lippi will give him another chance. "The goal smell from Inzaghi," is what Italy needs and right now our strikers has not developed the "Inzaghi skill."

Cassano?... a big disappointment and will have to really convince Lippi.

Cassano will be selected if he behaves.Lippi has a way of getting the best out of players and I'm sure My Cassano is no different.
Pippo is ageless because he can sit on the bench, come in the last 10 or 20 minutes and score a goal.DDR is a keeper, and so is Montolivo who seems to becoming our new Andrea Pirlo.

The break through for the azzurri will come from the summer Olympics.Lippi will sure pick some of Italy's under 21 players for his squad.I'm so proud of what Casiraghi and Zola have done with the Azurrini, and confident that they will continue where the heroes of 06 left off.

Monica,I heard, and it could just be rumors,That our own Demetrio Albertini who currently works for the FIGC and Don's former teammate in Milan had something to do with Donadoni getting the Azzurri Job.Of course, As a Milan fan,I hope it is just rumors.

I am sorry for Donadoni because as a player and as a human being he is a gentleman. Yet, as coach of the Italian National team, expectations were too high and he never showed a "true Champion Team."

His career did not end by penalty kicks. The Italian Federation must have evaluated the character of the team and believe me the scenario was totally negative. Italy was the laughing stock of the EURO 2008, period. First, we lost terribly against Netherlands. Was Donadoni still testing a strategy when he was supposed to present a tough team?

Romania? Unbelievable, we barely managed the draw... France? ok, here we won but it was not enough.

Italy could not go on in this "wishful thinking" that soon Donadoni might have found the magical formula to present the "world cup champions." It just did not work. Simple as that.

The challenge now is for Marcello Lippi to prove since the first match his undisputable experience. Come on, 2010 World Cup is just around the corner and we need to show a team with character, personality, great football technique in all departments.

Having said that, what do you think?

On to Lippi, we'll see how he does. At least now France is no longer a rival. Therefore, Lippi has practically "via libera" no obstacles to win the world cup again.

I agree with you on the fact that Gentile’s sacking was not handled properly, but in today’s football like Cannavaro said "when you win you are phenomena, and when you lose, everything is in question"
When Italy’s under 21- squad, and the title holders of the previous tournament failed to advance in UEFA 2006 Championship, the FIGC had to sack Gentile. It wasn't the best way to treat our 1982 world cup veteran and one of the best defenders Italy have produced, but in the world of football, it was business as usual. Not pretty!
