Either Italian Head Coach Roberto Donadoni knew that he was risking to be sacked after losing the EURO 2008 Quarterfinals  SPAIN 4 - 2 ITALY, or he was preparing his defense to remain the Coach.

A thing that  gets my attention is that whenever  players are interviewed and asked on whether  Donaodni should go, they all seem to want him to stay, including Captain Fabio Cannavaro.

Here are the words from Roberto Donadoni during his press conference.   The video is from the Italian program RAI SPORTS.

I have included the English translation and  thanks  Monica08 for helping me with this post.

Roberto Donadoni:  I know for sure that this experience made me mature even more. I am very proud of doing this. This experience has been very stimulating, exciting and because of this I won't stop thanking the Italian Federation [FIGC] that gave me this possibility. From this point of view, I come out better and improved. Though it could have been different.

I  agree with Donadoni, it could have been different had the team made it at least to the finals and playing well.

We all know Donadoni is an excellent footballer but as "head coach," he still need to mature, get more experience with strategies and choosing formations.  Don't you think?

I still say prove with results. I think Donadoni should stop talking because there is no point to what he is trying to prove by talking!

I think Donadoni deserves to stay on with the national team, everyone is probably wondering why? The Italian media can be down right brutal, but to be given the task of coaching the Azzurri after a World Cup win made it even harder for Donadoni, as anything less then perfection would be demand a failure. Also the loss of Cannavaro made the task, that much more difficult, Cannavaro is not a player who is just replaced, he is a general on the field. What would have happened had Pirlo not been suspended? and if Toni had scored as he has done for most of the past 5 years. Before I talk about Del Piero let me say that he is one of the greats and should have been used more, but in my opinion as a sub and not as a starter, Del Piero was not spectacular in qualification for the tournament, and in his one start, did not look that great. He did however impress me when he came off the bench as a sub, the Azzurri looked energized when Del Piero came off the bench. Donadoni did stick with Toni to long, but I can't blame him, most coaches probable would have made the same mistake, I believe Toni started each game in the World Cup even when he was misfiring. Many may not agree with me on this one, but I hope that Donadoni stays on as coach and leads the Azzurri to glory in 2010

I agree with some points but I disagree about Donadoni staying.

Yes, Del Piero was better as sub because the difference with the team was obvious by getting that extra energy and trust that "Hey, Del Piero is coming."

No excuses on the absence of Del Piero. I do agree that PIRLO might have been the added punch for the Azzurri because he reads the matches well, coordinate the midfield, create good passes, free kicks... oh well.. He is Pirlo.

During the whole DONADONI's era, I never was impressed 100% with the Azzurri's performance. Simply, all the time struggling, losing, not showing personality, no. It will be hard to convince me...

What in the world would Donadoni say about Turkey's performance today against big Germany? I don't think Terim would say "this was a learning experience." Donadoni may be right but they were the wrong words to say.

The objective for Italy - I assume - was to win every game, draw against France, score at least 2 goals per game, hopefully one of them by a striker and in action. It wasn't achieved.
