"I want Villa to avenge me by eliminating Italy," Spain Luis Enrique Front Page Marca, Thursday, June 19, 2008

I was so upset when I read the font page of Spain newspaper "MARCA."  Instead of calling for a peaceful match. Luis Enrique is asking for "revenge" from the elbow that Italy defender Mauro Tassotti gave him during the 1994 FIFA World Club.

                               Spain - Italy

The
EURO 2008 Quarterfinals SPAIN - ITALY  is this Sunday, June 22, 2008 in Vienna.

I also watched the news from Spain "Telediario"  with Jesus Alvarez, and I was proud from our Captain Fabio Cannavaro.

When Cannavaro was asked about the call for "revenge' from Luis Enrique, Cannavaro said that he did not agree with that position because that has nothing to do with the current teams.

Here is the English translation of the Front Page from Marca:
  • Greece 1 - 2 Spain. We won against the European Champions and now ... "We are going to win against the World Champions"
  • The big headline with the photo from Luis Enrique says:
-  "I want Villa to avenge me by eliminating Italy"
     Luis Enrique asks revenge

- On the bottom part a quote from Marco Tassotti saying "I did not go to hurt him"

I understand Luis Enrique feeling hurt. The point that I don't agree is in the sense of revenge sounding more like violence.

Man, is Luis Enrique out of common sense? the guy seems more like wanting a violence response from fans. I agree that he must be hurt like you mentioned but man another thing is to incite fans with his comments.
    What's your take?

This is just the press trying to heat things up and taking things out of context. I saw the interview and Luis Enrique was asked what his take on the game was and then they asked him if he wanted revenge. Luis then said " I knew this question was coming" then said "Of course, Vendetta, Vendetta" He was laughing and smiling when he answered and said "Vendetta, Vendetta". He was also asked who would you like to score and avenge him and he answered his paisano VILLA because they are both from the same region of Galicia. He did not say he wanted Villa to get revenge for him. He then continued to talk about the strength of both teams and felt Spain was in better form etc.. The press of course show a photo of serious face with the words Vendetta !. Really blowing things up. I think most Spaniards just want a fair game.
If you look back it is clear to anybody even Italians that the Tassotti elbow in the face is a clear penalty that was not called. These type of things should not happen at such a high level of competetion like the world cup. It brings shame and stains the great Italian futbol name. Italian futbol is better then this. Win or loose it should be with your head up high and not with dirty tactics. Good luck on Sunday, I think you'll have your hands full.

You might have a point Emilio but even Cannavaro did not like the position from Luis Enrique. I agree the press might be taking Luis' words out of proportion, but then MARCA is not doing a service to Spaniard fans.

I agree on your final comment "Win or loose it should be with your head up high and not with dirty tactics"

On Sunday, Italy must win, we got to win.
