Surprise with our formation Camoranesi and Del Piero are not in the starting lineup.
Here is the formation selected by Italian Head Coach Roberto Donadoni:
1-Gianluigi Buffon; 19-Gianluca Zambrotta, 2-Christian Panucci, 4-Giorgio Chiellini, 3-Fabio Grosso; 22-Alberto Aquilani, 10-Daniele De Rossi, 13-Massimo Ambrosini; 20-Simone Perrotta; 18-Antonio Cassano, 9-Luca Toni

Here is the formation selected by Spain Head Coach Luis Aragones
1-Iker Casillas; 15-Sergio Ramos, 5-Carles Puyol, 4-Carlos Marchena, 11-Joan Capdevila; 19-Marcos Senna; 6-Andres Iniesta, 8-Xavi, 21-David Silva; 7-David Villa, 9-Fernando Torres
One, two, three and here we go Referee Herbert Fandel whistles the beginning of the match! I am watching the match on ESPN and also following on the Italian media and Spaniard radio RADIO MARCA to see their perspective.
What a moment! Spain and Italy met twice before at the UEFA European Championship finals. First in the 1980 Tournament in Milan ending 0-0, second time in 1988 in Frankfurt, Italy won by one goal from Gianluca Vialli... curiously, Donadoni was part of that team. Danger from the FURIA ROJA, in the 15th minute, Spain forward El Nino Torres fools Italy defender Fabio Grosso right at the edge of the box and I was praying for him not to score. Thanks God, our Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini was there and makes a tackle in the penalty area... what a relief!
In the 17th minute, El Nino Torres shoots and thanks God it goes over the bar! By now, camera shows Coach Luis Aragones already upset and asking his player to be calm.
In the 18th minute Ambrosini sends an assist to Roman gladiator Simone Perrota but Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas saves! Oh madonna!!!! It could have been the first goal!
Let me tell you guys, Ambrosini is playing a great match! He seems possessed by the spirit of the gladiator GENNARO GATTUSO who is watching the match from the tribune with Andrea Pirlo both suspended. They must be suffering for not being able to be on the field.

Here is Ambrosini and Iniesta. Photo: afp
In the 22nd minute, here we go again with Ambrosini making a solo run sending an assist to Italy and Bayern Munich forward Luca Toni but did not reach.! Come on... I hope the ritual made by the Azzurri before the match for Luca to score works or he will keep that horrible mustache!
In the 23rd minute, oh no..... Roman gladiator Daniele De Rossi commits a foul on David Villa and its free kick for Spain. De Rossi protests but Referee grants the free kick. Villa shoots from about 25 meters and our great Saint goalkeeper Gigi Buffon saves!!!!! Bravo
Two minutes later, and I am getting nervous! In the 25th minute, another clear and present danger fom Villa but thanks God Ambrosini clears!!! Come on, We are giving too much space to Spain. This is not good! Come on guys!!!
Cameras show Aragones standing up to motivate his players! UFFAAAA. I get even nervous just watching Aragones!
Mamma mia!!! What's going on with our Azzurri!!!!!
In the 27th minute, Iniesta creates a dangerous move thanks God FABIO GROSSO is there to protect our net and clears!!!! What a match from Grosso. So far, he is doing a great job!
In the 29th minute, Luca Toni is offside!
- In the 30th minute, oh no.... Ambrosini commits a foul on Senna and is booked! Gee.... we better concentrate. Come on Ambro!
A minute later, in the 32nd minute, It's Silva again!!!! Uffa... Buffon clears and its corner for Spain.
Aragones right now is already mad because his players are not following his strategy and the camera shows him encouraging his players. I wonder why not focusing Donadoni!!!! I see more Aragones!
In the 34th minute, Iniesta shoots from long distance and it goes over the bar!!!
Counterattack and Ambrosini makes a pass to Cassano then to Luca Toni who heads the ball but not making it.

In the 35th minute a duel between former teammates with REAL MADRID. Cassano and Sergio Ramos! Cassano gets the best part here. Photo:afp
Oh my God... if I am suffering so is our Captain Fabio Cannavaro who is sitting on the bench and looking so desperate!!!!...
One minute stoppage time...
Time is over.........
In the 48th minute, no way Jose! Where is our defense?? Iniesta is unmarked and David Villa sends him an assist right on the corner of the box.... ufffa, thanks God he misses it!

What a great clear from our Giorgio Chiellini in the 49th minute!!!! Sylva creating a clear and present danger but Chiellini blocks Silva! Well done Chiellini!!!! Photo: afp
In the 57th minute, Italian Head Coach Roberto Donadoni makes his first substitution.
Perrotta out and Mauro Camoranesi in
Hello,,,, a minute later, in the 58th minute Spain Coach Luis Aragones makes 2 substitutions!!!! Talking about making early decisions!
Iniesta out, Cazorla in
Xavi out, Cesc Fabregas in
I don't understand Aragones' changes because they were the best in Spain... oh well, that's good for us guys!!! Iniesta was a clear and present danger!
I hope Donadoni substitutes Cassano and Zambrotta. So far, I have not seen the big difference with Cassano. Bring Del Piero pleaseeeeeee
In the 60th minute, Italy almost scores!!!!! Luca Toni first then the ball goes up and Camoranesi shoots and great save from Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas!!!!!! Guys this was going to be a super goal from Camoranesi! Hey, great move by Donadoni only three minutes in the match and already making a difference! Bravo!
Zambrotta not having a great match.... Wonder when is Donadoni going to substitute him!
In the 67th minute, our Roman gladiator Panucci commits a foul on Villa and Referee Fandel grants a free kick to Spain in the center of the goal! OH noooooo.... Villa takes position and our barrier stands solid.... then, Villa shoots and you can see the three roaring lions Panucci, De Rossi and Ambrosini jumping high... the ball is cleared by our Saint goalkeeper Gigi Buffon...

Mamma mia what is this! Ramos almost beheading Chiellini while El Nino Torres seems crying because Panucci is doing some karate move? Buffon is alert and without losing sight of the ball punches it away.
Photo: reuters
So it's corner for Spain.... uffaaaaaa... come on... . guys, I am getting nervous! The least thing I want to see is going to penalties! Come on, forza.
In the 69th minute, we get a great chance with Camoranesi!!!! Wow, I am telling you, Camoranesi is making a big difference while Cassano is not shining at all..... I hope Donadoni substitute him and bring Del Piero. Camoranesi sends a powerful assist to Luca Toni but he is surrounded by 2 Spaniards and barely heads the ball missing the target too wide! That was a good try...

Camoranesi and David Silva. Why Donadoni did not bring Camoranesi earlier? The difference between Aquilani and Camoranesi is like night and day. No offense to Aquilani but experience is clearly a plus right now and Camoranesi has it. Photo: afp
The camera from ESPN shows the faces of Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo suffering in the tribune watching how Luca Toni wasted this chance to score. So far, the ritual for unblocking Luca is not working.... oh my gosh... Come on LUCA... you can do it!!!!
Come on... 30 more minutes and no goals yet!!!!
Oh no, what is Donadoni doing? In the 73rd minute he makes his second substitution. Finally he substitutes Cassano and bring Antonio Di Natale. I wanted Del Piero in this match. I am telling you Cassano a big disappointment in the big moment! When he has the chance to show his talent, he disappears.... Oh well, Let's hope Di Natale do a better job
Immediately, Di Natale starts showing his great determination. In the 75th minute, Di Natale gets a pass from Camoranesi but he is offside!.
In the 76th minute, our Roman gladiator Panucci concedes a corner, Ramos gets the ball and shoots only to find Saint goalkeeper GIGI saving this ball!
Forza Azzurriiiiiii.. guys keep chanting PO PO PO PO PO PO for our guys. They need our support right now!
Guys, this is going out of control!!!!!!
In the 79th minute, Senna shoots powerfully that Saint Goalkeeper saves but lose the ball and goes inches to the net when "the sanctity of Buffon" appears and saves the ball when it was about to enter!!!!!!!! Mamma mia.... guys, I better go on my knees and start praying!!!!

Just look at the ball guys... inches before passing the goal line and GIGI got it!!! He is a saint!
Photo: reuters
In the 83rd minute, I am having a headache!!!! I am shouting for Donadoni to substitute LUCA TONI. Come on.... Antonio Di Natale sends a great assist where Fabio Grosso had the clear chance to open the score when LUCA TONI gets on his way and I am telling you, the ritual did not work... this was already a GOAL calling for Grosso and Luca Toni obstructed him.
In the 84th minute, Spain Head Coach Luis Aragones makes his last substitution. El Nino Torres is out and he is not happy at all. Guiza is in Wow, Torres makes his disappointment so obvious with his face!!!!

Shaking hands Torres and Aragones but deep inside Torres is exploding! Photo: afp
I don't think Donadoni is reading the match at all! How I miss Andrea Pirlo!!!!!! When is Donadoni going to substitute Luca... Only 5 more minutes to finish regular 90 minutes!
Come on,,, bring DEL PIERO!!!! I am having a headache... I love Luca Toni but it is clear that he is not sharp right now. EURO 2008 has not been his tournament at all!
That's it guys, Referee Herbert Fandel whistles the end of the second half and we are heading to extra time!!!!!!!
Unbelievable!!!!!
First extra time is over... we are going to the next second extra time....... don't tell me we are heading to penalty kicks because I will faint!!!!!
NOOOOO Come on guys, let's score... DONADONI BRING DEL PIERO!!!!!!!
So far, Chiellini and Grosso have been the best for Italy!
In the 105th minute Referee Herbert Fandel whistles the end of the first extra half time! Donadoni is so stubborned that he is keeping Luca Toni when he has 1 more substitution and Toni looks tired.
Second extra time starts.....
Hallelullaj! In the 108th minute, finally Donadoni listened to my shout and is bringing Del Piero! Aquilani is out.
My God! Why he waited so long to bring Del Piero!!!!!
Come on Del Piero don't let me down... Pinturicchio!!!! Forza!!!!! Let's score Del PIerooooooooo
Oh guys... the whole chant from "ITALIA , ITALIA, ITALIA, ITALIA!!!" you can hear it clearly!!!!! The stadium is getting desperate too and I don't blame them. I am mad!!!! I want my Italia to win!!!
In the 120th minute, Referee Herbert Fandel whistles the end of the extra times!!!

This photo shows clearly that players from both group are devastated, they are tired! Photo: Reuters

Ready for the "Russian Roulette" Referee Handel preparing the teams for penalties. Photo: ansa
Guys, we are going to penalties!!!!!! Unbelievable. I can't continue typing.... .this is madnesss... no!!!!! This is madness..... OH please Lord illuminate Saint Goalkeeper Gigi Buffon!!!!!
Watch the video of penalty shoot outs EURO 2008 Spain - Italy - EUROPEI 2008

What a moment! The two best goalkeepers not seeing face to face to concentrate on their "National duty" to avoid defeat by blocking penalties. Photo: afp
Here are the the penalties order.
SPAIN: David Villa ...... scores! Buffon goes to the other side 1 - 0

ITALY: Grosso ........ scores! Casillas cannot save despite going to the right direction. 1 - 1
SPAIN: Cazorla ..... scores. Buffon goes to the other side 2-1

ITALY: De Rossi .... MISSED shoots to the right and Casillas saves. 2-1

Look at Casillas stretching all the way like if his life depended on that ball. photo: afp

De Rossi is destroyed after missing his penalty. Photo: afp

SPAIN: Senna ........ scores shoots to the center 3-1
ITALY: Camoranesi ..... scores shooting to the right top corner! 3-2
SPAIN: Guiza ...... MISSED shoots to the left and Buffon saves! 3-2
ITALY: Di Natale .... MISSED Casillas saves when the ball goes low to his left side!!! Unbelievable! 3-2

Anotnio Di Natale is devastated after missing his penalty!
Now, if Fabregas scores Spain win.... 4-2
SPAIN: Fabregas.... scores!!!!!!! OHNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Buffon went to the opposite side. Madonna santa!!!! Abbiamo perso gli Europei! / We lost the EURO 2008

The moment where all Spain were glued to their TV and the glory of Cesc Fabregas breaking the curse of losing on June 22 and finally Spain beating Italy after 88 years! Photo: reuters

Wow! Fabregas explodes of happiness while we Italian fans start crying. Photo: afp
A fair victory.

Casillas is just out of control for giving Spain a crucial victory when saving 2 penalties! Fabregas run to celebrate with his buddy!

Two great figures for Spain. David Villa converting the first penalty and Casilla saving Di Natale's penalty to give Spain the victory to pass to the EURO 2008 Semifinals. Photo: afp

The other face of the match. Italy and Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro holding his frustration for not being able to play and defend Italy after he was ruled out for a knee injury. Italy and Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo is just in tears, crying openly, frustrated for missing the match for a suspension. How Italy needed his "brains and free kicks.
How I missed Pirlo and just seeing him cry broke my heart and I cried with Pirlo as many Italian fans also felt his pain. I cannot bear him cry. It's my Pirlo, "Italy and Milan's brains"Photo: reuters
What a tragedy!!!!! Don't even ask me about what I think of Donadoni and his formation. Don't even dare right now because Donadoni could not read the match and lose EURO 2008 for not making changes on time and sad to say it.... Luca Toni the biggest disappointment but I don't blame him. I blame Donadoni who kept him in all 3 matches the 90 minutes when it was clear TO EVERYBODY that Luca was out of shape!
What a disappointment! Donadoni please have the decency to resign.......
At the end EL MATADOR, killed the "Italian bull!" Spain won fairly without giving up. Congrats to Spain only I am sorry for my Italy.

No matter what, as Italian fans we must support our Azzurri and keep waving our Italian flags with pride.
We cannot abandon them.

Already have the next Italy game posted! This is the test for Spain to show what they're made of. I predict a goal by Villa, I'm still waiting for an Italy goal from a corner kick headed by Panucci just like in the Scotland game.

Del Piero - Cassano
I don't think Luca should be in the starting lineup, I will try Del Piero-Cassano they already showed chemistry. Don't you think? Luca can be a super sub. Not sure about the condition of my Materazzi.
I can't believe our good milanista Pietro hasn't share his thoughts yet. He must be working after taking days off. Pietro where are you?

Mark and milan99, i gotta congrats you guys for beating me this time! Milan99 you finally arrived early! Man, i was so busy with so much work.
Mark, thanks God the match is on Sunday because i cannot keep taking days off.
Here is my possible formation
Buffon
Grosso, Materazzi, Panucci,Zambrotta
De Rossi, Camoranesi, Aquilani, Ambrosini
Del Piero - Luca Toni
I did not want to include Toni, but i have a feeling it might be his moment. So, why not giving him another try. Man, but if he doesn't score in the first half and keep missing opportunities, then bring Cassano with Del Piero.
What's your take?

to Mark: I don't hate Materazzi, in fact I love the way he score with his head but I don't like his way of hurting players so badly!

How you made laugh! I read your comment and Mark's too about beating Pietro and I was surprised too. Usually, Pietro checks early morning and periodically.

Hello Paul,
You are for the 4-3-2-1 formation with Luca as the sole striker? I have been praying for Luca Toni to start scoring. Personally, based on Luca's latest performance, I won't use him as sole striker. I rather have in 4-4-2 or a 4-3-1-2, meaning LUCA and ....
My choice right now is for Del Piero - Luca.
What do you think of Di Natale and Quagliarella, will you use them as subs or will go for Cassano, Borriello?
Reply to this
Anna Italia
I still like Luca Toni as the sole striker. Even if he's currently had a bit of bad luck in front of goal. Toni will also cause the the Spanish defense a large headache as he did with France, he just needs the creative support.
If Italy were to go with two strikers upfront I have to go with Borriello, Del Piero has had his chance to impress as a starter, and I thought he was much more effective as a sub.It sounds like Borriello has impressed in practice, and it might be time to give him his shot, as Genoa did this year.
If Italy play the 4-3-2-1 formation I like Cassano for his creativity, and I think he provide better support for Toni then Quagliarella. I'm kinda on the fence about Di Natale, I would bring him on as a Sub.
In the end I'd play Buffon as a striker just as long as we win.
Reply to this
Man, even Buffon as a striker LOL. I like Borriello, but I will use him a sub not in the starting line up for this match.
Del Piero, man, yes, i can go ahead with his experience, motivation and he is a good team player whether or not he scores, he also can make assists. On your point Cssano - Quagliarella, i agree. Cassano is better. What's your take?
Reply to this
Forza Italia, one more day and we better prepare for our Pizza party and cheer for the Azzurri.
Cassano is a better option than Quagliarella. I agree with Paul and Pietro.
I think Borriello deserves a chance if he is playing better during trainings. Don't you think?
As for Buffon even trying to put him as a striker, that was a good one. Hey, it would be nice if Buffon shoots a penalty and score!
Reply to this
If Borriello is showing better skills during the trainings, than, be my guest and give him a chance. We need goals, desperately needs goals. I would love to see Buffon shooting a penalty... but SCORING

The one player that I would like to see get a chance to start would be Aquilani. Even if he is not as experienced as Perrotta. Nothing against Del Piero but I would sub Borriello in before putting Del Piero in, not a popular decision but you gotta give Borriello his chance.
Reply to this
Man, we are agreeing on this one because Aquilani will work better in this match along his Roman teammates with better understanding. You touched Anna's untouchable and you will use Borriello first instead of Del Piero. I am just curious to hear Anna's comment on this point.
What's your take?
Reply to this
Paul, I agree with u on Aquilani! but for Borriello, no because we ain't playing any team, its Spain so start the experienced Del Piero!
Reply to this
Paul!!!! My friend... say what???!!!! Borriello ahead of Del Piero? No, no, no, no, and no. In a crucial match, I rather go for Del Piero in the starting line up and if he doesn't work than I will have BORRIELLO in.
I love DEL PIERO and he is among my "untouchables" like Pietro mentioned, but I am not that blind to keep him playing if he is not fit or sharp. My first concern is the TEAM and then the players.
But, I almost faint with the suggestion of Borriello ahead of la madonnina as some journalists called Del Piero LOL
Borriello is doing great in the practices. I surely will give him a chance.
As for Aquilani, here I agree 100%. I think Aquilani will be the key young player in the midfield along with his Roman gladiators De Rossi, Perrotta. But I am not ruling out Camoranesi. What do you think?

Thx for the warm Welcome everyone. I know the Borriello pick over Del Piero is not a very popular one, but what can I say eventually Del Piero will have to make way for the younger players. It's great to see a group so passionate about the Azzurri. Be interested to find out who the AC Milan supporters are, safe to say Milan99Auzzurrigirl is. Anna i agree that Donadoni should have substituted Luca Toni at least in the second half, man, he is not working, Toto is making more difference. I have a headache too.
Mark, hold the pizza because i can't eat right now man. Extra time.....

I am just praying,,, let's pray guys,,,, pray,,, and keep chanting PO PO PO PO PO PO

Ok guys, I hold the pizza, I am with you that Luca should be substituted. It's crazy! Grosso had the ball to score and Luca blew it.

Del Piero is in, Anna, i hope he won't disappoint us. Forza Del Piero, Man, we got to win. I think we are heading for penalties.

Where in the world is Italy? Del Piero barely had the ball twice. NO connection between the midfield and forwards. Not ven in set pieces. The best in Italy- Chiellini, Grosso

Guys, man, what to say? sack Donadoni! Anna i agree that Donadoni made the big mistake by never substituting Luca having 3 fit strikers on the bench waiting for their chance. Man, what a luck!
Reply to this
I have no words!!!!!!! So sad for Italy and for Luca Toni, the guy will be blamed for this Europei but the real guilty is Donadoni for not reading the matches. I feel bad for De Rossi and Toto.....
Reply to this
I agree that Donadoni should be honest enough to resign. He betrayed us all, he asked for unity and believe in the team, we did but he did not do his job. What else to say about the guy. He had his chance. I will disagree with you on not giving much responsibility to Luca because he also had part of the blame. Don't you think?
Reply to this
Mark, i don't have my head clear right now and i don't know if Luca Toni is to be blamed or not, i want to hear from the rest of the family here. what's your take guys?
Reply to this
I have mixed feelings about the whole thing but on Luca Toni being a disappointment, that's for sure. Blaming him for losing the EURO? NO.
It's the coach responsibility to change players when they are not playing at their best and Donadoni did not have the guts to change Luca in all 3 matches while Del Piero, Borriello, Di Natale and Quagliarella were available.
Nina, what are your thoughts on Luca - Donadoni?

We have to calm down guys. No matter what we are still behind la nazionale even in the bad moments. Let's cheer up guys.
Reply to this
Man, so hard to calm down. Anna are you adding the video highlights?
Mark but i agree man that we have to support our team in this sad moment too.

It is a sad day today,But The Auzzurri can hold their heads high. Luca Toni did not have a good tournament yes, but he battled out their and that is all you can ask. I wish he had scored but even the best sometimes fall on hard times. As for Donadoni I think he kept his faith in Toni a little to long but, I can't blame him for that, I believed that Toni was going to break through at any moment and score that goal we were all waiting for. Donadoni needs to start rebuilding the team, Chiellini played an amazing game, Donadoni needs to make this team his own.

Paul, I also believed Toni was going to unblock and scores. My question is if you are the coach and see your main point of reference already failed in the first 2 matches and in this one keep missing and not even substituting him? Excuse me, but for me, that's bad coaching. Don't you think?
Toni is not responsible. He did not have a good tournament like you mentioned but Donadoni should have substituted today at least in the second half because we were risking the whole enchilada.
I had it with Donadoni. Chiellini was a jewel! So precious!

I am still updating the post adding photos and will add the video too....
I am with a broken heart but thinking the positive things of our Nazionale.
I missed PIRLO so much !!!!!!!

The only thing i can say is that donadoni made the terrible mistake to not use Del piero at least from the 60th minute. He got in and he made 2 great situations.Chiellini and camoranezi the best by far...Big games are for big players mr donadoni...why r u hating del piero so much!!!!????
Reply to this
Photis you read my mind
My goodness sake per la madonna!!! As you know I have been questioning Donadoni since he was nominated for the position, and lately for not calling up SUPER PIPPO INZAGHI when it was clear that Inzaghi wast at his best. Then, not using DEL PIERO properly? Excuse me, but the guy is insane!
Did you take notice on how late he made the changes... oh well...that's a question going to the other post about "rating our players." So let's talk about each player on that post.
But you said it right.. It seems Donadoni has something personal against Del Piero!

I just wanted to say what a great site this is. i am so disappointed from todays loss but i wanted to mention that this site is now in my favorites and I will be visiting daily. I'm so happy I found a good site dealing with Serie A and Italy national because it is so hard to follow (serie a) here in the US and especially if you cannot read italian.

Today I went down to see Inter Milan's and Manchester City practice at M&T bank stadium. I'm 40 and love and have played the worlds most popular sport my whole life. Today, after Manchester City's practice was over, Inter Milan declined to practice. A lot of people paid 40 $ just to see some of the best players in the world just kick the ball around a little thats all they wanted to see especially the kids!Come on guys , as it stands I think the score should be Manchester City 1 to Inter Milans NIL.Thanks Manchester City, and have a great day tomorrow!
