Bad news not only for the Italian National Football team but also for Italian fans with the latest news that our Captain Fabio Cannavaro will miss the EURO 2008 after an ankle injury during the first day training in Baden.

During the training Cannavaro clashed with Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini and immediately he felt a knock to his ankle.

Cannavaro remained on the ground for about 20 minutes to avoid further damages with the hope that it was going to be something minor.  Yet, the terrible news arrived when he had no option but to be taken off on a stretcher directly to the hospital.

Click the video to watch Cannavaro's injury during the  training.

The painful thing for Cannavaro was not much the injury, but knowing that he had to go  home as he told the journalists waiting for his comments at the hospital. Wow, what can I say? It is just painful.

To make matters worst, tests indicated that Cannavaro needed to be operated. Further tests will be taken in the next 48 hours.

Now, the problem is who will replace Cannavaro because Italian Head Coach Roberto Donadoni still have time to call for a replacement.  Many suggest Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini because he is also a central defender.

Italian Soccer Serie A send Fabio Cannavaro words of encouragement and wishing him a prompt recovery.

Man, i don't know what to say, we were so tough evaluating Cannavaro in the Belgium match that watching these photos makes me sad like you. Man, the guy after all is our Captain and it really hurts when something like this happens to one of your own, i feel so bad for Cannavaro because it must be painful for him to miss the EURO at this stage.

Guys, i invite you to say a prayer for Cannavaro and wish him proper recovery. What's your take?

Pierto, I feel so bad because I was praying that Don keeps him on the bench until he improves his form, but now I can't hold back my tears. He has done so much for the Azzurri and I would have wanted him to be part of the team. My best memory of Canna besides lifting the world cup in 06 was in France 98 when he got injured in the middle of a game, and refused to be taken off the field to defend the Azzurri despite being stitched several times. Can you imagine that! Rest and train yes, but not sent home like this. We critiqued him because we are used to Canna who is the best in the world. I pray for his quick recovery and for God to give him the faith and the strength to deal with this tragedy. It breaks my heart to see the look on his face. All italian fans will indeed share Cannavaro's pain.

Man, that's why I felt so bad too because we were tough on our evaluation as coaches for his poor performance, but man, another thing is to see him missing for injury than for lack of shape. wow, that's my point too, "rest and train but not sent home like this."

I sensed Anna's pain on her post too for Cannavaro as all of us Italian fans and we owe him an applause, so join me in front of your computer to applaud our Capitano. What's your take?

Pietro, I’m praying for him and this is a lesson that we should cherish and enjoy our Azzurri stars while we can rather than criticizing them. I will continue to pray for him and all our Azzurri heroes. I’m so sad I don't know what to say. Chiellini must feel awful, I know it was an accident, but I can only imagine how he feels now. Seriously, I can’t stop crying. i know this happens to player, but i can't help it.

You are right Pietro, I was devastated watching the news and the pain of Cannavaro. It's sad and I share Nina's view that it was ok for Cannavaro to rest and train but not to go home injured. My prayers are obviously for Cannavaro's prompt recovery.

I also applauded Cannavaro in front of my computer as you asked Nina.

I feel bad for Cannavaro. Losing the national team captain to a training injury. The whole Italy team just got dealt a big blow. Whichever central defender replaces him won't be under much pressure- Look at what happened with Barzagli in the 2006 world cup- he replaced Nesta or Materazzi, can't remember.

It's a bad news losing our Captain in a training not during the match. The only positive thing is that at least Donadoni has time to replace him prior the first match. It would have been terrible if this had happened during a match. Don't you think?

Just hope for Gamberini to do his best.

I was reading your updates of the training and I think Gamberini is a good replacement but Materazzi is returning to his good condition from what I have been reading in your reports.

Good recovery for our capitano Cannavaro.

Let's hope that this is the suffering before the final joy. In 06 it was the Calciopoli and now the captain, the Azzurri always finds triumphs after tragedies. If it is a sign, then it is sign for good things to come after period of hardship. Forza Azzurri
