Serie A is over and we welcome the EURO 2008!!!!

I will be covering the EURO 2008 from the Italian perspective including coverage of the teams having players from the Italian Serie A.

The list is out and the big surprise is that finally Italian Head Coach Roberto Donadoni called up great Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero who is the Serie A Top Scorer with 21 goals!

The bad news is that Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi is out!!!!

It just doesn't make sense because Inzaghi has played better than rebel boy Antonio Cassano.   Well,  I want to know the reasoning on choosing Cassano who is an excellent player but a terrible character that might compromise unnecessary yellow cards and not Inzaghi.  Honestly, I wish Cassano to shine and learn from his previous mistakes.

The other surprise was the calling of goalkeeper Amelia from Livorno when he has had a terrible season and not calling Cagliari goalkeeper Marco Storari who has practically saved Cagliari from Relegation while Livorno is in the relegation!

Here are the 24 called up players by Italian Head Coach Roberto Donadoni for EURO 2008:

Goalkeepers: Amelia (Livorno),  Gigi Buffon (Juventus), De Sanctis (Siviglia);

Defenders: Andrea Barzagli (Palermo), Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Grosso (Olympique Lyonnais), Marco Materazzi (Inter), Christian Panucci (Roma), Gianluca Zambrotta (Barcellona);

Midfielders: Massimo Ambrosini (AC Milan), Alberto Aquilani (Roma), Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Daniele De Rossi (Roma),  Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina),  Simone Perrotta (Roma), Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan)

Forwards: Marco Borriello (Genoa), Antonio Cassano (Sampdoria); Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese), Luca Toni (Bayern Monaco).

Here are the groups of the EURO 2008.  Start making your predictions.

Czech Republic
Portugal
Switzerland
Turkey
 Group B

Austria
Croatia
Germany
Poland
 Group C

Let's salute our Italian National team and wish them the best.  Undoubtedly, Italian Soccer Serie A supports 100% the Italian National team!

Besides the exclusion of Storari and Inzaghi, I agree with the selection of the rest of the players.  How about you?  Come on, have your say now.

Anna good news you will be covering the EURO 2008, I thought you were going to stop until next season, I am happy with this news! Good.

Regarding the called up players, you will be surpised that an Interisti makes this statement "it's an insult not calling up Inzaghi when like you mentioned he had a great season."

Amelia, not happy with that called up either. I like the inclusion of Barzagli, Perrotta, of course MY MATERAZZI, I bet you will support him now with the nazionale, right?

Man, let's shake hands and called up our peace treaty again, you won me with your admission that is an insult not having called up Inzaghi when my man had a great season compared to the crazy Cassano or Quagliarella plus the man is more a team player too.

I also don't like Amelia included and not Storari, Anna already contagiated us with the fever of Storari!

pietro, i agree with you, and i hope he doesn't have one of his episodes. He is a great talent, and I hate to see him get wasted. With exception of roby baggio, I haven't seen a player that plays with such flair and style. When he first came on the scene, I honestly thought he was going to be the next maradona. that is how good he can be.

Nina, I'm fainting!!! Svengo! Am I understanding right and you are comparing Cassano with my GREAT ROBERTO BAGGIO????? I hope not because there is not a single iota common between them at all starting from the character. Baggio besides being an execellent footballer has a good temper.

Let me slap my face to wake up from this misunderstanding ah aha hah ... though, I respect your opinion if you think Cssano and Baggio are similar... still, just the thought makes me sweat

Anna, I’m sorry, I just repeated the same mistake, and compared them again in another entry. Believe me, I adore Roby baggio and I’m regular at his blog, have the autobiography, the whole nine yards, and would put him in the same category as maradona or pele at least for me. Cassano is not as good because nobody is as good as baggio , but he was only other player in Italy that had the potential of becoming close to roby. Of course, character wise there is no comparison. roby is a great champion off and on the pitch and human rights advocate. Believe me, I cried when he retired, and since then been looking for someone who has that magic. Totti came close, but not close enough for me. Outside of Italy, lionel messi is my man ,and cassano could have been as good if he didn’t act so stupid.

Nina you are coming to senses... the good Lord has spoken to your soul Of course, I forgive you for the mistake of comparing Cassano with Roberto Baggio. My headache disappeared after reading your apology.

Cassano has the potential BUT NEVER WILL HE COMPARE AT ALL WITH THE "GENTLEMAN BAGGIO."

Super Totti, I can buy it, Totti is way better than CASSANO in every sense.

You know Nina, right now I am watching the final of the Champions League and seeing CHELSEA struggling.... one of the players that impressed me the most when meeting personally was DIDIER DROGBA and I hope he comes to Milan. More than meeting Sheva and talking to him on several occasions it is DROGBA who impacted me the most, sure, Mr. SPECIAL ONE too.

Believe me, Anna made me swallow my words, and I was not trying to compare the character of baggio and cassano nor the talent. I was just saying that cassano had the potential on becoming among the great ones, but he spoiled it with his attitude. As for little leo,i love love love love Messi. He is the best player in the world in my opinion. And unlike most players nowadays, he is so humble and down to earth.By the way, Messi is Roby baggio's favorite player too according to a recent interview baggio gave to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Though, i don't know if Suri, the romanista will support him because to what i have followed through her arguments with Anna there is no way she can support Materazzi unles she changed her mind. Roberto you said the right words, it would have been RIDICULOUS not calling Del Piero, excuse me, hello, the guy is the CAPOCANONIERE, makes assist, great motivator, team player, what else he wanted?

Just hope he is not the one to stay because Donadoni can take only 23 players so 1 will be out,, most likely among the strikers... either Quagliarella or maybe even Cassano.

      FORZA DEL PIEROOOOOOOOOOO

Anna, i hope not cassano. i know what you guys are saying and I totally agree that he could be a liability, but he has something that no other player in our squad does; that extra magic. So I hope that Don leaves one of the other guys that have similar characteristics. I hope borriello or quagliarella, but not cassano. After the 5 match ban, I think he learned his lesson.By the way , I think both borriello and qaugliarella are great players, but talent wise, vision wise, cassano is one of a kind. i know about the goals and the numbers, but cassano takes your breath away when you watch him play.

Nina I totally agree that Cassano "the rebel boy" has that magic touch. Yet, I won't risk such an important match for an unexpected cassanata. It's no wonder why almost all the media were shocked to see Cassano and not Inzaghi among the called up players. Cassano MUST mature and show he is already a grown up man.

Also agree that Cassano "takes my breath way when watching him play." The thing is that I don't feel that secure about him controlling his temper.
Oh welll...I hope Cassano plays excellent. No question about it, besides whoever remain in the 23 called up, I will be supporting 100%.

Anna Italia, I saw your comment about the choice of Cassano to the detriment of Inzaghi. I think that while Inzaghi is a super "punta" Cassano is a super "mezzapunta" instead. Therefore they cannot play in the same post. If Cassano is still the one who played with Roma I am very happy for the "squadra" that he will play the european championship. But I understand your worries about his behaviour on the pitch.

That's true Ridha... Inzaghi is the perfect super punta while Cassano a mezza punta. Yet, I rather have Inzaghi right now than Cassano for consistency. I love Cassano too but at this point I think first about the TEAM not the individual player.

Behavior is important in football.... for the sake of the group team.
