News is that Man U Coach Sir Alex Ferguson is not using neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Rooney! They are among the substitutes! Hey, it means Ferguson is thinking more in the EPL League... After all guys, they have the advantage of winning the first leg. If it comes to an emergency situation, I am sure he will bring Cristiano Ronaldo.
What a day! You won't believe it guys... just in the 28th minute, Referee Tom Henning grants Roma a penalty! Man U defender Wes Brown brought down Roma striker Amantino Mancini. Taking the penalty is midfielder Daniele De Rossi.
In the 29th minute, De Rossi takes position, get sets, ready,shoot..... AND THE BALL WENT HIGH OVER THE BAR!!!! Mamma mia! What a wasted opportunity to take Roma an early lead.
Click on the right to watch the video of DE ROSSI missed penalty. This is unforgivable my friends. I think De Rossi was too nervous or what!!!! This was a golden opportunity!!!! Imagine our beloved Captain Totti when he covered his face when De Rossi took the penalty last week, though he did not miss it. Gee... why missing the penalty here!!!!!
It's ok... still time for the Roman Gladiators......
In the 48th minute, another wasted opportunity for Roma! My gosh, what's happening to the gladiators? Are they losing concentration or what!!! Striker Mirko Vucinic shoots from the edge of the box and Man U goalkeeper Van der Sar saves!!!!!
I can't believe it!!!! Come on ROMA... we just need to score 2 goals to go to extra time!
Just when ROMA needed to score and Manchester United takes the lead!!!!!
In the 70th minute, Man U midfielder Owen Hargreaves sends a cross to Carlitos Tevez who just headed the ball blasting our Roma goalkeeper DONI!!!! This is almost the end. Only 20 more minutes for Roma to make 3 goals for the extra time... Oh my.... how De Rossi must regret missing that penalty!!!!
Manchester United 1 - 0 AS ROMA
Click on the right screen to watch the goal by Carlitos Tevez.Unbelievable, Roma did not profit their goal opportunities.
I questioned Spalletti timing for making changes. Why not bringing Ludovic Giuly earlier? Then, waiting until the 81st minute to bring in striker Mauro Esposito for Taddei?
Roma needed to have fresh players earlier, and Esposito should have been brough maybe in the 70th minute. It wasn't that Roma was winning but needing to play more aggressively.
Match over guys!!! Manchester United is in Semifinals!!!! I expected at leat a goal from Roma. Manchester United were without striker Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney just entered until the 74th minute. It means that Roma could not beat a weaker Man U. What would have happened if Ronaldo and Ronney were in the starting line up?
Manchester United had 48% ball possession compared to Roma 52%, yet, Man U is the winner. 12 corner kicks for Man U and 8 for Roma. De Rossi and Vucinic had their chances to shine but they missed it. Once again, when the big moments come for Roma to show their strength something goes wrong.
Oh well, Roma must concentrate now on the race for the Italian Serie A Scudetto. Match on Sunday is against Udinese. Time to put this Champions League match in the past and time for Coach Luciano Spalletti to prepare a winning formation and strategy to beat Udinese at the Friuli Stadium.

Count me in Anna, you are 100% right if we don't support Roma as Italian fans, who will? FORZA ROMA.

Good Mark! That's the way to talk. I know it's a tough match.... but can you imagine DE ROSSI, PERROTTA, MEXES, DONI, PANUCCI standing alone without listening their fans just because it is "supposedly" a lost battle? GEE... I CAN'T LEAVE THEM ALONE.. no matter what I have to put a strong front for them.

I will be there too!!!

GOOD KENNTAK!!!!!
Hey, MAN U is having latest problems with their defense, so TIME TO CHEER UP..... just hope for VUCINIC and MANCINI to score MANY GOALS.........

Hey guys, with you guys climbing the mountain for Roma, I know that there "ain no mountain higher", I will be cheering for Roma on the side line.
Reply to this
I am not leaving my guys standing alone in the field when just everybody seems to abandon them. It will be hard to reach the top of the mountain but the Gladiators can do it with concentration, keeping focused and not granting much space to Man U.... ah... especially marking CRISTIANO RONALDO not like at the Olimpico where he moved almost freely.
FORZA ROMAAAAAA

Probably because I have watched every Roma game this year. Maybe you guys havent, Im not worried one bit, Im very confident in a 2-0, 3-1 win. Im already looking at the Barca-Roma next round.

That's the way to talk Nicholas!!!!! Of course, I have watched every match of ROMA. Just looking at Vucinic right now on the screen... ESPN2 broadcasting the match.... ciaooooo
Reply to this
Hi Nicholas, 2-0 will give Roma to extra time and 3-1 will get Roma through because away goal counts double against extra time, right?
Reply to this
2-0 will give a tie, 3-1 will give a win, away goals are tie breaker, yes u are correct.

Man, i won't be able to watch the match live, i will check your blog for results, working right now. Forza Roma

Very pleased with Roma, Played great in the champions league. Remeber without Juan, Perrotta, and Totti in game 1. Now look how well Juan played, and Doni was great. Imagine with Totti, taking that penalty. I cant wait for Man u to play a healthy team, Barca will kill them.
Grazie Roma!!!! Scudetto and Coppa!!!!!
Reply to this
I agree with you NICHOLAS.
I hope BARCA beat MAN U too! Totti would have been the SAVIOR taking the penalty. I wonder what happened to De Rossi!!!! He did not miss the penalty against Genoa!!!
Anyway, I am happy that Man U did not repeat their 7-1. FORZA ROMA!!!!! Come back and beat Udinese!
Reply to this
Anna that was fast you already put the videos for the penalty and the goal! Thumbs up girl! I just watched them and felt so bad for De Rossi.
Exactly Nicholas now is Scudetto and Coppa. FORZA ROMA.

Too bad Roma could not win or even get a draw. Though, guys I disagree with you on the race for the Scudetto because I want my Inter to win it.
Reply to this
Mark good luck for Inter to beat Fiorentina this Sunday. I am with you on that to help Milan shorten the distance, but as far for the Scudetto, I rather have ROMA to win it.

ROMA for the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia!

Sad game, but I did not think Roma would advance. Man U played a lot more wide open than I expected, I wish Roma could have punished them for that. They almost did, but seemed a bit hesitant and lacking confidence on their shots. De Rossi's penalty kick miss typified the lack of confidence. However, Roma did play hard and well at times. Had De Rossi made the penalty kick, it would have been a totally different game.
After watching this game, one thing that Roma needs is a fast midfielder who can really put pressure on the defense like a Kaka or C. Ronaldo. I noticed that when Mancini had a break away he was too slow and methodical getting down the field. He should have busted down there, he could have had a one on one with the keeper.
Next year the final is in Rome. I am ready to cheer Roma on next season!
Reply to this
Roma had that "mental block" of not believing they could beat Man U at Old Trafford. De Rossi missing that penalty was just the final blow to sink Roma's confidence, then later Vucinic also blew a chance to score.
What upsets me is that Ferguson did not even include Cristiano Ronaldo neither Rooney in the starting lineup THINKING that they could beat Roma.
Next year... the final in Rome. Well, I am ready to cheer for AC MILAN back in the Champions League.
Reply to this
I would have been insulted by Ferguson not including those players.
Roma should have had that attitude and played like they were the champs.
Reply to this
Kenntak, what are you talking about!!! That's why I was upset because Ferguson DID NOT INCLUDE Cristiano Ronaldo at all and WAYNE ROONEY substituted Giggs in the 74th MINUTE.
It was like saying, "WE CAN BEAT ROMA EVEN WITHOUT Cristiano Ronaldo and Roooney!!!!! What's your thought?
Reply to this
That's my thoughts exactly, the players should have taken that as an insult.
Reply to this
Kenntak, I don't think Roma is ready for a Champions League final. Man, unless they start showing a stronger team next season, then, they will be ready. Roma has everything to be a main player in the Champs, but their players must believe it first. Don't you think?

Pietro, I think Roma have the makings of a great team. Their defenses are strong which is the basic building blocks for a good team. They need a winger or two in the midfield to dribble through Man U's last line of defense and create chances to score. I felt bad for De Rossi. He maybe inexperience and yet in time, he will be one of the best holding midfielders
Reply to this
Hilda what's the point of having a great defense but not consistent strikers?
Reply to this
Hilda I agree that Roma has a strong defense: PANUCCI, JUAN, MEXES.... midfielders: DE ROSSI, PERROTTA... my question will be with their strikers as without Super Totti, it seems Vucinic and Mancini struggle to keep the leadership.
Reply to this
What do you mean? You mean De Rossi is not consistent with his strikes? Or Roma do not have consistent strikers? If you mean the first one, De Rossi is not a striker, he is a holding midfielder. Although I have to admit that he needs to practise on spot-kicks. As for the second one, you are comparing apples to oranges. Bear in mind that Totti was not present in the match.
Reply to this
Hilda, I said De Rossi is a midfielder
What I meant is that without TOTTI, Vucinic and Mancini are NOT CONSISTENTLY SCORING TO GUARANTEE A VICTORY FOR ROMA.
I agree that DE ROSSI better do his homework and practice more PENALTY KICKS.
Are we clear now Hilda?

Hi Anna, I was refering to Pietro's question. I did not see your post until I submitted mine. As you can see, we are pretty much right on the subjects.

Thanks God Hilda! I was worried that I did not explain myself clear earlier ha ha ha ha..... got it.
Yes, we are right on target now.

Roma is a strong team but not in International competitions. I agree with Anna that without totti Vucinic and Mancini are not enough. This has to change.

Some thoughts on the game:
I on the other hand am glad Ferguson didn't include Cristiano Ronaldo. Didn't he do that the last time they played? The message from Ferguson was 'we're already qualified.' The Roma team needed to play on the pitch as if to say "No, CR7, oh yeah, we'll show you..."
77th minute loved hearing the travelling Roma fans singing "Roma Roma Roma, core de sta citta, unico grande amore..." I saw the game on ESPN, you?
Do you guys think it was a penalty or did Mancini just fall a little too easily? I think he fell to easily. De Rossi, what a missed opportunity
Glad Perotta got to play at Old Trafford this time. Why did Spaletti put Esposito in the last 10 minutes? What's the point? He's not a miracle worker much less a "super sub."
Saw that Antunes wasn't on the bench by the way.
Reply to this
Ricardo15, I agree with your statement on "No, CR7, oh yeah, we'll show you." Sadly, ROMA DID NOT PROFIT from this big absence.
I watched the match on ESPN2 too because the Italian channel did not show it in USA. Van der Sar no doubt he is a good goalkeeper. It was a SHAME or pure nervous from De Rossi missing that penalty directly 'alle stelle."
Esposito is not a super sub. ANTUNES as always, not even on the bench!!!!
Now Roma must beat Udinese and Fiorentina beat Inter to keep the race for the Scudetto.
