The big  day arrived for Fiorentina to be in the quarterfinals after 1997!!!!

I hope Coach Cesare Prandelli opts for an aggressive match instead of a defensive match.

Point for Fiorentina is to score goals, if possible, in the first half.

Guys, let's keep ball possession and don't allow too much space to PSV Eindhoven.  Mi raccomando Frey!

Amazing guys, 35,000 Fiorentina fans at the Artemio Franchi Stadium supporting the VIOLA!   It's a great match with a friendly atmosphere.

PSV fans arrived early in Firenze to support their team.  Here are a group posing at the Duomo.  Wow, just looking at this photo gives me goosebumps because  I lived in Firenze.   Nice memories from the Duomo. Photo: Ansa

A great opening and Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien Frey having a superb match!

Striker Adrian Mutu and Giampaolo Pazzini still not scoring.

First half ends 0-0.  Fiorentina is dominating but not converting opportunities to open the score.  A clear chance came in the 26th minute, when Dirk Marcellis commits a foul on Adrian Mutu. Referee grants a free kick to the VIOLA. Mutu took the free kick but hit the wall!   Then, Zdravko Kuzmanovic shoots and it's saved by PSV goalkeeper Gomes.  Uffa!

PSV reacted with the counterattack and Edison Mendez missed the target when the ball went over the bar!

Danger for Fiorentina in the second half is leaving PSV takes the counterattack because Farfan is a fast player and proving to create danger for the Fiorentina defense.  Challenge is for Fiorentina striker  Adrian Mutu to break the score.  Up to the first half, goalkeeper Sebastien Frey has been superb!
In the 46th minute, goalkeeper Frey makes a save when Ibrahim Afellay shoots.  Corner kick for PSV and Farfan shoots an inswinger right to the center cleared by our great Adrian Mutu!   Way to go MUTU!
Fianlly, guys, in the 56th minute, after a cross from midfielder  Fabio Liberani, striker Adrian Mutu blasted goalkeeper Gomes!!!!
Fiorentina 1 - 0 PSV Eindhoven.

Bad things for PSV when goalkeeper Gomes injured during the move of the goal and is replaced by goalkeeper
Roorda in the 60th minute.

Well, happiness lasted few minutes!  In the 63rd minute, PSV striker Koevermans equalized the score!  I think it was a mistake by defender Jorgensen, not sure.
Fiorentina 1 - 1 PSV Eindhoven

You wont' believe it, but right after Koevermans scored, PSV coach substitutes him!!!!!  Wow,,, incredible!  He was playing well.  In the 64th minute, Koevermans is out and Lazovic in.

I wish Pazzini scores too!   Come on Pazzini!

Coach Prandelli decides to substitute midfielder Fabio Liverani in the 75th minute and  striker Christian "Il BOBO" Vieri is in.  So happy to see VIERI!  I hope he scores the winning goal!  It will be fantastic!  Come on Vieri!  This change means that Prandelli is not for a draw but to break the score!   Fiorentina must win this match, come on guys!

I am a bit disappointed with the result.  Fiorentina wasted many chances, Pazzini failed to mark a difference and Vieri did not have enough time to deliver a goal.  Fiorentina is practically saved by goalkeeper Sebastien Frey making superb saves.

I am looking forward to this one. Fiorentina is the only Italian club team left in European competition. As Anna said, play aggressively.

I join you guys to cheer for Fiorentina. Yes, it's the only Italian team left in the UEFA and we must win. Frey was the star in the match against Everton, I hope he can be again an important figure.

Pietro, as for the match in the Serie A, I will go for a draw or lost. I am waiting for Anna's preview to see the background and give my predictions. But Empoli even in last will want to win.

I was disappointed! Pazzini, once again, cannot score where Fiorentina needed. Mutu did her best. The man of the match is FREY! I think they have a chance on their second leg. FORZA FIORENTINA!!!

Ah.... VIERI... How I want him to shine again!!!!!

I agree, Fiorentina wasted some chances.

They have to score in the next leg and not lose.

It could be worse though, look at what FC Zenit St. Petersburg did, amazing.

It was easier for Fiorentina to score at the Artemio Franchi, though, they still can make it on the second leg. Aren't you surprised with goalkeeper Frey's lastest performance? Gee, he impressed me!

I want Pazzini to start playing consistently and scoring. He is becoming more like Gilardino in Milan. Don't you think?

That's a good analogy Anna with Pazzini! He needs to step it up, I think he can. Frey did a great job, there was nothing he could have done on PSV's goal, the defense left him stranded.

Agree with the Pazzini - Gilardino situation. Man, you are right on Frey's great job, that's what gets me mad that even if goalkeeper are doing great they end up conceding goals by the mistake of the defense. What's your take?

The issue of "self esteem" is a bad component in football.

Gilardino - Pazzini seems to block themselves and not match up to their top competitors. Pazzini not able to replace LUCA TONI not even to match Adrian Mutu.

          Gilardino
never matching ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO. Both are great footballers and might reach their top level only when they DEBLOCK from that "self imposed low esteem." Don't you think?

I would have liked to see Manuel Da Costa play against his former team- PSV. How many games has he played since January? Will he play this weekend?

Too bad that "Portuguese players" seem not to find enough playing time with Coach Luciano Spalletti. Antunes RARELY plays... Da Costa? He is not even among the called up players for the match against Genoa.
