PREVIEW Serie A Week 31 - Italian Serie A Thirty First Round Match Saturday March 29 and Sunday, March 30 "The Scudetto Race and the Salvation is Still OPEN"

By Anna Italia

Hello my friends,

With only 8 more matches and the top 5 teams facing either too many injuries or internal division, planning the right formation and having a good plan is a must for EVERY coach.   The matches not to miss are Lazio - FC INTER, Napoli - Palermo, Cagliari - Roma,  Udinese - Fiorentina, and Milan - Atalanta.

Making mistakes at this stage will be devastated for Inter, Roma, Fiorentina, Juventus, and Milan.  Salvation is also open for Cagliari, Livorno, Reggina, Empoli, Catania, and Parma. A false step can affect both  the top 5 teams and the bottom 6 teams.  Let's see what might happen.

Here is my PREVIEW of the Serie A Week 31st - Italian Soccer Serie A Thirty First Round scheduled on Saturday, March 29 amd Sunday, March 30, 2008.

So, my friends, get ready for this weekend countdown for the 2007-2008 Scudetto is closer. Only 8 more matches, meaning 24 more points  to grab or to waste.  Start making your calculations.

Question is: Who do you think will win the 2007-2008 Italian Soccer Serie A Scudetto?

CAGLIARI - AS ROMA
Sant'Elia Stadium
Serie A Standing:
  Cagliari 18th position, 28 points
AS Roma 2nd position, 64 points

Cagliari faces AS Roma with a great motivation!  After getting back their "3 points"when penalized on March 1, Cagliari went up from the 20th position to the 18th position.

Cagliari is conscious that they have only "few chances" to really save themselves.

I think Cagliari has better chance to beat Roma on Saturday because Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti will not count with key players such as midfielders Simone Perrotta, Daniele De Rossi, and striker Mirko Vucinic for suspension.

It will be easier for Cagliari to beat Roma without their key players than beating upcoming matches with AC Milan on Week 32 and with Inter on Week 35 and even on Week 36 when playing against Fiorentina.

Cagliari coach Davide Ballardini has the advantage of counting with key players such as goalkeeper Marco Storari, who has become the most ardent believer of their Salvation, and strikers
Roberto Acquafresca and Pasquale Foggia.

Roma has the HUMONGOUS task to prepare not only the match against Cagliari on Saturday, but also the Champions League Match against Manchester United on Tuesday, April 1 at the Olimpico and then a week later on April 9 playing the second leg at Old Trafford.
         AS Roma   -  Manchester United

I agree with Captain Francesco Totti that if it comes to choose which one to win either the Scudetto or the Champions, he will go for the Champions. So, here is why I see Cagliari taking advantage of a "weak Roman formation." Totti is not even fully recovered from his right knee injury and honestly, I don't think Spalletti will risk him the entire 90 minutes in the match against Cagliari. I rather have TOTTI fit for the Champions.

Last week, Cagliari had a 1-1 draw against Sampdoria, while Roma beat Empoli 2-1.

Adding to ROMA's list of suspended players and injured playes, statistics say that Roma have not been able to win at the Sant'Elia stadium since October 1995!  Wow, amazing!  Really, guys, without having all the key players, I don't think Roma can beat Cagliari.
Personally, I would like to see ROMA winning to keep the race for the Scudetto.  However, based on the current conditions of the giallorossi without their main players and the highly motivated Cagliari, I will go for Cagliari.

Best hope for Roma will be the young Alberto Aquilani and goalkeeper Doni.

If Cagliari beat Roma, then, Roma might pray for Lazio to beat Inter. Their point difference will remain the same 4 points.

My Prediction:  CAGLIARI

LAZIO - FC INTER
Olimpico di Roma Stadium
Serie A Standing:
  Lazio 10th position, 37 points
FC Inter, 1st position, 68 points

Ok, here is a delicate situation.  Inter facing internal division among players  and coach Roberto Mancini risk losing the Scudetto not because Roma might beat them, but because  of their individual egos instead of thinking about the "team" might backfire them. In other words, Inter might lose the "almost granted Scudetto" because they were beaten by Inter themselves!

Can Lazio beat Inter? YES, THEY CAN.  Is not that Inter has win so convincingly lately.  Ironically, Lazio will do a favor to their City Rival "ROMA" if they beat Inter.

Last week it went bad for the neriazzurri having their second defeat. FC INTER 1 - 2 FC JUVENTUS.  Lazio also lost against Fiorentina.

Inter will be without their two main strikers: Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is recovering from a tendon injury and Julio Cruz for disqualification.

Ibrahimovic is following individual training mostly at the gym.   In a sense, it would be even better if Zlatan doesn't play. Arguably, the problems within the dressing room  has to do with his "ego stardom," making everybody uncomfortable instead of being united.

So the chance will be for strikers Hernan Crespo and David Suazo.

Lazio
Disqualified: Massimo Mutarelli.
Cautioned: Dabo, De Silvestri, Ledesma, Mudingayi, Pandev, Siviglia.

Inter
Disqualified: Cruz.
Cautioned: Cambiasso, Cordoba, Figo, Julio Cesar, Vieira.

It will be  a tough match for ex Lazio stars Coach Roberto Mancini and Hernan Crespo.

Bad news for Coach Mancini includes key i,njured playe such as midfielder Esteban Cambiasso, Olivier Dacourt, Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba.  Good news is the return of Pele after a one match suspension.

Challenge for Lazio coach Delio Rossi will be to explode the offense with strikers Goran Pandev and Tommaso Rocchi. Inter's defense is not that bright lately, especially with defender Marco Materazzi who was the worst player in the match against Juventus.  Delio Rossi might opt for a tridente most likely Rolando Bianchi replacing Stefano Mauri.

On Tueday, Lazio played a preparatory friendly match against Montenero di Bissaccia beating them 6 goals to none!  Goals from Bianchi, Mauri, and Fabio Vignaroli. Hey, that might boost Lazio's morale.

Gaby Mudingay might susbstite the disqualified Massimo Mutarelli.

Advantage for Lazio is goalkeeper Marco Ballotta and the fans most likely cheering against Mancini and Crespo.

Lazio and Inter will play again for the Coppa Italia. So, this match might be a "testing water."

If Roma beat Cagliari and Lazio beat Inter, the difference between Roma and Inter will be only 1 point!  If both lose their respective matches, the difference remain 4 points.  A victory might have Lazio in the 8th position depending on the results of Atalanta, Genoa, and Napoli.

My Prediction: LAZIO

AC MILAN -  ATALANTA
San Siro Stadium
Serie A Standing:
AC Milan 5th position, 49  points
                           Atalanta 9th position, 38 points

What else to expect from an already "tired team"?  Milan cannot afford to lose at San Siro neither to draw. The last 8 matches must be victory for the rossoneri if wanting to reach the 4th position to participate in next year UEFA Champions League.

Right now Fiorentina has the 4th position with 53 points only 4 points difference. If Udinese beat Fiorentina and Milan beat Atalanta, there will be only  1 point difference.

However if Atalanta beat Milan and Sampdoria and Udinese win their respective matches, Milan can go down to the 7th position. At that point, it will be better to start waving "Ciao ciao Champions League."

Best bet for AC Milan is striker Alexandre Pato, who also scored the only goal for Brazil  on Wednesday.

Big problem is the absence of midfileder Musica and Magia KAKA for a back problem.  Here is where midfielder Clarence Seedorf might take his favorite position as trequartista, which is Kaka's role.

We might see Ancelotti opting for the two young strikers PATO and PALOSCHI.  Though, Ancelotti might try first Gilardino with Pato and bring later Paloschi.

Last week, Atalanta obtained a goalless draw against Catania. The rossoneri got a victory
TORINO 0 - 1 AC MILAN with a goal from Pato.

Statistics show that in the last 5 matches Milan takes the lead while Atalanta won at San Siro only once in 1991.

Problem for Atalanta is their difficult to win matches away.

It will be a real miracle if Atalanta beat Milan after losing to Lazio, Cagliari, Torino, and Udinese.  But in football, my friends, nothing is impossible. We might see the resurgence from Milan or the end of the rossoneri.

Key players for Atalanta are midfielder Cristiano Doni, Sergio Floccari,  and Antonio Langella.

In Week 12 - Antonio Langella scored against the  rossoneri. Atalanta 2 - 1 AC Milan.

Here is where things started to go wrong for Milan. They were supposed to win this rescheduled match and instead they lost it.

Milan has no suspended players only  four players one yellow card away from suspension: Giuseppe Favalli, Kakha Kaladze, Alessandro Nesta and Massimo Oddo. Wow, this might be a problem as all of them are part of the defense.

Atalanta has one suspended player: Carrozzieri and  four players are cautioned: De Ascentis, Cristiano Doni, Sergio Floccari and Talamonti

Atalanta coach Gigi Del Neri is taking this match seriously and is having a friendly match today against Brembate di Sopra, at the Comunale Sports Centre of Brembate di Sopra.

The players had a 3 day off break! So, they might be full of energy to cause an upset at San Siro. Gee, I hope they don't because  I cheer for MILAN!

My Prediction: AC MILAN

UDINESE - FIORENTINA
Friuli Stadium
Serie A Standing:
  Udinese 6th position,  47 points
                           Fiorentina 4th position, 53 points

Here is wehre the "REAL BATTLE  for a spoit in the Champions League is going on.  Contenders are Fiorentina, Milan, Udinese and even Sampdoria.

Fiorentina right now holds the 4th position with 53 points  followed by Milan with 49 point, only 4 points difference.

If Udinese beat Fioretntina and Milan beat Atalanta, Fiorentina will remain with 53 points while Milan might reach 52 points and Udinese 50 points.  If this prediction happens, then, the next round will be a DECISIVE round.

If Atalanta beat MIlan and Udinese beat Fiorentina, then, a real CRISIS will explode in San Siro.  Milan will go down to the 6th position  while Udinese will move to the 5th position with 50 points, only 1 point ahead of Milan.

Motivation is high for both teams after winning their respective matches last week. Fiorentina beat Lazio, and Udinese beat Livorno.

Hopefully, Udinese will  have their star strikers Antionio Di Natale and Fabio Quagliarella. Though, Coach Pasquale Marino  will use the "tridente" formula adding Simone Pepe.

This will be a tough match.  Let's see how well DI NATALE - QUAGLIARELLA work to beat Fiorentina.

Problem for Fiorentina to keep the lead  will be challenged when they face the pressure of passing the UEFA Cup quarterfinals.

The main problem is the absence of striker Adrian Mutu and Fabio Liverani.

Making matters worst for Coach Cesare Prandelli is the list of injured players Martin Jorgensen, Franco Semioli and Alessandro Gamberini. Plus, goalkeeper Sebastien Frey is not completely fit either.

Time for Giampaolo Pazzini and Pablo Osvaldo to show their striking technique.

My Prediction: UDINESE

FC JUVENTUS -  PARMA
Olimpico di Torino Stadium
Serie A Standing:
FC Juventus 3rd position, 58 points
                           Parma 15th position, 29 points

Apparently, Juventus has an easy win.  Though, in football nothing is predictable. Parma is almost touching the relegation zone.

Juventus can only win this match to keep their quest for the Scudetto and maybe reach the second position.  If Cagliari beat Roma and Juventus beat Parma, Juventus will have 61 points and Roma 64 points, their point differnece will be only 3.

Problem is for Parma. If losing this match and Livorno, Cagliari, Reggina and Empoli win their respective matches they might end up in the last position of the Serie A!!!!

Parma coach  Hector Cuper has one main problem.  Striker Cristiano Lucarelli will be out for suspension.  Most likely  Andrea Gasbarroni will be in the starting lineup along Igor Budan.

Motivation for Juventus is pretty high. Last week, they beat Inter.  FC INTER 1 - 2 FC JUVENTUS  Plus, striker David Trezeguet is in the top scorer list with 17 goals in this Season. Alessandro Del Piero breaking the record of Gaetano Scirea with his 552 appearances  with Juventus.

Midfielder Mauro Camoranesi was the best player for Italy in the match Spain 1 - 0  Italy.

For Juventus, it will be an upset if the match ends with a draw.

I won't settle for draw either.

Juventus-Parma, the record...

My Prediction: FC Juventus

NAPOLI - PALERMO
San Paolo Stadium
Serie A Standing:
  Napoli 11th position,  37 points
                           Palermo 12th position, 36 points

Ok you guys, time to wake up and smell the coffee for Palermo.

Too bad Coach Francesco Guidolin could not improve Palermo's standing. Going around with the recycling  of coaches former Coach Stefano Colantuno is back.

Question is whether Colantuono  will manage to get at least a draw at the San Paolo Stadium?  Can he beat Napoli?  Palermo might beat them if having the complete formation but Palermo is coming without some of their main players. Though, it is a real test because Palermo has not won at the San Paolo since 55 years!  Unbelievable!  However, I think
Palermo might manage to get at least a  draw.

There is only 1 point difference between both teams. It will be the first victory of Palermo if beating Napoli after not being able to win in their last 5 matches.

Wonder also whether Colantuono will be able to present a solid formation after seeing Palermo players being so loyal to Guidolin.  It will be a tough one. However, not only for Palermo players but also Napoli coach Edy Reja has been living "extra time."  Reja should have been sacked about a month ago.  He remained in his job, and I even give him credit for beating SUPER INTER in Week 26.

Let's put it this way. Palermo might beat Napoli because Coach Reja will not have a strong formation.  Striker Marcelo Zalayeta is out, goalkeeper Gennaro Iezzo  and Andrea Cupi are also out. Not to even mention the suspended players midfielder Walter Gargano and Daniele Mannini. So, if Palermo does not profit  from a weaker Napoli, then, it would be a total lost for Palermo.

Napoli striker Ezequiel Lavezzi is inspired  and have the right support form the midfield, he might lead Napoli to victory.  No doubt about it.

Challenge will be for Napoli  subs to show their worth. For example, goalkeeper Matteo Giannello who will replace goalkeeper Iezzo.

Not eveything is smooth for Palermo either.

Fabrizio Biava and Leandro Rinaudo are suspended. Adding to the injured players there are strikers Fabrizio Miccoli, Edison Cavani and Ciro Capuano.

So, it will be Amauri to take the lead for Palermo in the attack.

My Prediction: DRAW

CATANIA - TORINO
Angelo Massimino Stadium
Serie A Standing:
  Catania 16th position, 29 points
                           Torino 14th position, 31 points

My Prediction: TORINO

EMPOLI - SAMPDORIA

Serie A Standing:
  Empoli 20th position, 26 points
                           Sampdoria 7th position, 46 points

My Prediction: SAMPDORIA

GENOA - REGGINA
Luigi Ferraris Stadium
Serie A Standing:
  Genoa 8th position, 39 points
                           Reggina 19th position, 29 points

My Prediction: Genoa

AS LIVORNO - AC SIENA
Armando Picchi Stadium
Serie A Standing:
AS Livorno 17th position, 28 points
AC Siena 14th position, 35 points

My Prediction:  AC SIENA

I already have my pencil and paper ready to start making calculation. You are right Anna, the top 5 teams and the last 6 teams in the Serie A Standings risk a lot this weekend.

Just hope my Inter will get back in shape and think about not losing this Scudetto in the last moments after we started the season well.

I was happy to see finally your position on the match Cagliari - Roma. You made the point that had not been for the absence of Roma key players it would have been an easy victory for Roma, now it's Cagliari chance to win this match. Hope your Storari block their attempts to score.

    Here are my predictions:

Cagliari - AS Roma = CAGLIARI
Lazio - FC Inter = INTER, SUPER INTER

Guys, i know that the trophy of the Champions League is one of those Totti did not lift in his entire career. But he must be very optimistic.

I would advice him like that! To pass to the next round, Roma need to beat Man U for 3-0 or more goalless win at home! Man U will be very dangerrous at home of course!

Suri i am really surprised that you are not with our Super Totti on his desire to lift the Champions League trophy. I agree that realistically speaking it will be hard for Roma to win it like you and Kenntak said. Though, man, come on, i want to see Totti with that trophy. Maybe Spalletti should ask Ancelotti how he has won in the Champions League many times even with an old formation. What's your take?

However, I want to believe in SUPER POWER and pray with all my heart for Coach Luciano Spalletti to have a revelation and find the perfect formation and strategies to go all the way to the final in the Champions...

I want TOTTI to lift the Champions League trophy. COME ON TOTTIIIIIIIIIIIIII It's about the whole team giving that extra effort and avoid injuries!
