RESULTS Serie A Week 23: FC JUVENTUS 1 - 0 ROMA Goal by Alessandro Del Piero Superb match for Buffon and Del Piero, bad for Totti and company

LA PARTITISSIMA - Buffon v. Doni, Del Piero v. Totti
                                  FC Juventus   1   -   0  ROMA

SUBSTITUTIONS:   46' Mauro Camoranesi out, Nocerino in             60' Taddei out, Ludovic Giuly in
67' David Trezeguet out, Sissoko in                  73' David Pizarro out, Alberto Aquilani in
81' Pavel Nedved out, Raffaele Palladino in      82' Simone Perrotta out, Mauro Esposito in

This is the CLASH OF THE CLASHES!  Juventus versus Roma. Let's put it this way better: DEL PIERO v. TOTTI.    BUFFON (Italian goalkeeper) v. DONI (Brazil goalkeeper)

Though Roma is in the second position, it is also true that they have slow down and wasted a chance to keep a tighter distance with Inter after losing embarassingly  against AC Siena 3-0..  To make matters worst for Roma and their dream of reaching Inter, Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero practically put a "warning sign" with his superb free kick giving Juventus the winning goal in the 45th minute. Now, there are 11 points between Inter and Roma, and only 1 point between Roma and Juventus.

Despite Roma having 56.1% ball possession and Juventus only 43.9%, the one taking the victory was Juventus.  Roma could not find the concentration to execute their strategy in the field.  Roma Captain Francesco Totti was not in his top form and neither midfielder Simone Perrotta. Boy, this is really a problem for Roma because they will play against Real Madrid for the Champions League on Tuesday. Honestly, I don't think Roma is ready to face Real Madrid.

My question is for Roma coach Luciano Spalletti.  Why you did not include defender Christian Panucci when it was clear that most players were not fit?  I understand Totti being the flag of Roma and helping the team. But, hey, he barely could keep 90 minutes running. Needless to mention midfielder Simone Perrotta who seems lost.

I think Spalletti did not read the match at all because he waited too long to substitute tired players. For example, his first substitution was until the 60th minute Taddei was out for Ludovic Giuly. Then, the second substitution came in the 73rd minute when finally he called the young recovered Alberto Aquilani for David Pizarro.

While watching the match, I noticed Spalletti looking on the floor not straight on the field. Contrary to Juventus coach Claudio Ranieiri who was "ALL ALERT" and apparently reading the match well.

Though the first half almost ended without goals. The great JUVENTUS FLAG taking a free kick in the 45th minute, blasted Roma goalkeeper right into the top corner of the net.  Can you believe it? Wow, it was just amazing, such a powerful shot!

Juventus Saint goalkeeper TGigi Buffon had almost no problem.  Maybe Roma could have scored when Max Tonetto sent a powerful shot in the near post but it was punched away by Gigi.

Question is with only 15 more matches, can Roma really continue dreaming with the scudetto being now 11 points behind the powerful Inter?  Let me throw another question.  Can Juventus dream to achieve the second position of the Serie A leaving Roma third, if not 4th?

This was a good result for Inter, Roma is now 11 points behind. I will be more afraid of Juve than Roma. Anna we could say that Del Piero was better today than Totti, right?

Congratulations Mark. You must be in heaven celebrating for "an almost guaranteed scudetto." Yes, today, Alessandro Del Piero was way better than Totti.

Very important win for us tonight! Now the race for spot 2 is totally open again ... nearby did we extend the lead to spot 5 at 9 points.

It wasn't a really great game in my eyes, but Alex' superb free-kick strike was an adequat compensation!

Totti was very poor ... but I don't wonder then I see what position he had to play tonight. When will Mr. Spaletti check that he isn't a centre striker but a playmaker?

    Bonne nuit.

        ALESSANDRO DEL PIERO RULES!

You bet it was an important "THE MOST IMPORTANT" result for Juventus. You were right on your thinking to fight for the second position with Roma, while us MILAN fight for the 3rd or 4th at this point.  Roma having 56.1% ball possession could not score a single goal? I saw they committed many fouls on Del Piero trying to stop him. Yet, the great JUVE FLAG DEL PIERO raised like the hero time after time fighting for the honor of LA VECCHIA SIGNORA!  Gee... I am feeling poetic

Yes, it wasn't a great match. But, DEL PIERO ruling, commanding all the time. Don't you think?

I was surprised not seeing SUPER TOTTI react. Sure, he is not in his top form. I think Spalletti relies too much on Totti and he needs time to recover. I rather would use Alberto Aquilani, fresh, young, fast....

This all but handed Inter the championship. It is a shame because Roma totally outplayed Juventus in the second half.
