Reaction after the CONTROVERSIAL victory of Inter 1 - 0 Empoli "Were the penalties legal or not?

By Anna Italia

Was it a penalty or not?

I was surprised to hear the great LUIGI COLLINA saying that the penalty granted to Inter was not legal.

Boy, did I have to read the news twice!!!

In other words, the match would have been a draw? Are you kidding me or what?

No wonder why Empoli Coach Malesani said in La Domenica Sportiva yesterday that he considered his team played well and deserved better results, instead of Inter 1 - 0 Empoli.

Fact is that Inter, despite being the sole leader with 56 points, is struggling in the last 3 matches.  Does it mean they will lose or get more draws?  I hope so to make the Serie A race towards the Scudetto more interesting.

Inter Coach Roberto Mancini declared: "Empoli defended well and we didn't manage to find openings with our strikers and half-strikers. But we were in control and we knew the goal would come sooner or later.  We wouldn't have had any big problems if we had remained with eleven men, but we made things a bit hard for ourselves. However, I'm pleased with this hard-fought victory.  Empoli are a good team. They created problems for us and let's not forget that they beat Milan in Milan."

Regarding Empoli's penalty.  Mancini commented: "Julio Cesar's penalty save? I didn't think either of them were penalties. I was sure Julio Cesar would save it.

Mancini added that "Patrick made a mistake when he was sent off, and he knows this. But everything started from the penalty incident that saw us lose our serenity. An inexistent foul and a yellow card were given against us and that's when the match changed. This is wrong.

"We can't think we can play and win with ten men every Sunday, so we have to be more careful. It's the third time now. Unfortunately the role of referee is difficult. They are influenced too much by what the press says. The would referee much better if they listened less to the media.

Inter President Massimo Moratti said that Inter would have won in 2002 if it hadn't been for certain situations. "I think he's right," said Mancini. "Everyone should know this, and maybe Inter would have won more. Inter lost that championship, and maybe others, through no fault of their own.

"It's a different situation now though. I don't think the referees act in bad faith. Sometimes they make mistakes that have always been made in the world of football."

It was not a penalty and even Mancini admitted it. Referee this time blew it, it would have been a draw. If Collina says it was not legal who am i to contradict him? what's your take?

This was one of the most controversial matches. The penalty to Inter was not a penalty after all even admitted by Mancini, still Inter won. oh well.... the world goes around.

Whether it was a penalty or not, Empoli should have made theirs. They could have had a draw that way too.

Oh you touched a clever point. That's true, Empoli missed their penalty and it was unforgivable. They had their chance too. Agree 100% with you.

You will be surprised with my response as an Inter fan. In the beginning it looked a clear penalty but after the replay I agree it was not a penalty and I was surprised to read that even our coach admitted it. But like Kenntak mentioned Empoli also had their chance to score with their penalty and missed it.

Was I surprised with your response? YES! Of course! I agree that Empoli also had their chance to equalize and blew it when Saudati missed the penalty.
