By Anna Italia
ITALY 3 - 1 FAROE ISLANDS
10' Benjaminsen F. (own goal) 83' Rogvi Jacobsen
35' Luca Toni
41' Giorgio Chiellini
SUBSTITUTIONS: 52' Fabio Cannavaro out, Daniele Bonera in 75' Samuelsen S. out, Thorleifsson in
58' Massimo Ambrosini out, Fabio Quagliarella in 86' Holst out, Flotum in
74' Luca Toni out, Alberto Gilardino in
Current EURO 2008 Standings: Italy 1st position, 29 points (already qualified)
after this match Faroe Islands 7th position, 0 points
Although Italy already qualified, the challenge is to win convincingly at least with 2 goals difference. After a superb first half with 3 goals, Italy lost concentration in the second half allowing one goal. Still, Italy showed great football and with this victory finishes as top leader of Group B with 29 points. It seems Italian Head Coach Roberto Donadoni wanted to test other players for possible options to the "almost untouchables" like Luca Toni, Andrea Pirlo, and Gigi Buffon. After this result, all three proven to be "untouchables." What do you think?

As World Cup Champions, I hope Italy wins with more than 2 goals difference. Say no more... Referee Meyer from Germany whistles the beginning of the match. . |

A great attitude of Saint Goalkeeper Gigi Buffon to declared yesterday that he was willing to move aside and give a chance to Amelia to "mettersi in mostra." Donadoni did well to give resting time to Buffon now that qualification was secured. |
| 45' | That's it guys!!! Referee Meyer whistles the end of the first half. Time to go for the break "intervallo". Let's hope Donadoni motivates the team and not return to get a draw but a VICTORY. | |

| 60' | Hey guys, something is not clicking.... Faroe Islands are playing much better while Italy losing control, concentration. Either changes start working or we might have a surprise here. Challenge is to win convincingly. A draw will be terrible. | |
| 64' | Mamma mia.... Olsen again!!!! Olsen is attacking and sends a long shot and Italy is saved for the second time when the ball goes over the bar! | |

Happy for Italy's victory but like you mentioned, in the second half Faroe Islands played much better and Italy almost risk the result. My scale will be 8 1/2.

Anna I agree with your last statement, all 3 Buffon, Toni, and Pirlo are just untouchables. Sad not seeing Gilardino scored neither Iaquinta, but happy for Italy victory and top leader of the group, we beat France in this, what's your take?
Reply to this
Pietro here I am.... bringing another bottle of Chianti classico to celebrate! So, you gave an 8 1/2 mark, that's good. I gave them an 8.
True, I think, after this match, it was clear that Donadoni has not been able to find YET -- he might in the future -- subs for the great untouchables: Giggi Buffon, Luca Toni, and Andrea Pirlo.
Wonder what's Kenntak and Milan99 position on this regard.

CIAO ANNA AND PIETRO!!!
I didn't post a comment on this entry earier because I've already said before that this match won't be as hard as the Scotland game, and I was right
FORZA AZZURRI!!!

Milan99 I agree the Scotland match was more important. Yet, this one too. What would have happened if losing against Scotland?
Reply to this
You are right lost against Scotland means no qualifying, lost against Faroe Island means no Champs.

Exactly... now, Italy can walk proudly. We finished 1st and France second.

Yes Anna we are CHAMPS!!!

Congratulations to Italy in what has turned out to be a great Euro qualification campaign. It was a little rocky at the beginning, but they turned it around like true Champions!

Kenntak finally you are here man. Is not nice that Italy despite everything and the rocky beginning made it? On top of that we are first in the group. So what's new with you?
Reply to this
Hey Kenntak where have you been? Missing all the action. Yes, I agree. Italy had a shaky beginning and we almost crucified DONADONI, at the end he survived and finished #1 in Group B. A great first half, I was not happy with the second half at all. Italy almost risked a draw with a determined Faroe Islands wanting to get a decent score. Thanks God Amelia stopped all intent of goals. Jacobsen was a headache! Gee, he almost scored 2 goals!!!
What's your evalution in the scale of 1 to 10 for the Azzurri?
Reply to this
I will give the Azzurri an 8 for the qualification campaign. Because of the later start for Serie A, they start a little slow in September and do not get fit until October or so. They tied Lithuania at home which was a negative but beat Scotland in Scotland when they needed to which is impressive. They still have not solved their problems with France. A tie and a loss against the French. In addition, I wish they had more convincing wins (like at the Faroe Islands). Otherwise, finishing at the top of a tough group says a lot. While they stumbled a little, they showed great tenacity and acted like true Champions in the end.

Kenntak it seems we are not being carried away for our emotions when judging the Italian National team. Sure, with the victory I could have given them a 10. But, no. Realistically, in the second half they lost speed, concentration, and Faroe Islands showed a better football JUST in the second half. Still, the Italians played well, gave a good show, and we ended up as the leader of the group. What else to ask?
I totally agree. The challenge is still to play like champions against Scotland and France. Now, I think Donadoni has found a determined team. Don't you think? I will go with the untouchables: Gigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso, Massimo Ambrosini, Simone Perrotta, and Daniele De Rossi.
