EURO 2008 Qualifiers: Ukraine - Italy, Alessandro Del Piero Thinks Is Fundamental to Win

By Anna Italia

After the 0 - 0 draw with France, and a poor team performance, Italy has no other option than to WIN or else.  This point is clear to Alessandro Del Piero, who expressed his views on his website on Monday.  "It's a fundamental match for us to continue our march in Europe," said Del Piero.

Here is the situation for EURO 2008 Qualifiers Group B - Italy Group

- France          19
- Scotland       18
- Italy              17
- Ukraine         13
- Lithuania        7
- Georgia          7
- Faroe Islands 0

The current standings shows Italy in third place, two points behind group leaders France, and one point behind Scotland.

The good news for Italy is that Ukraine is four points behind Italy. The bad news is that Ukraine as well as Italy need to win if wanting to qualify for the EURO 2008. Do not expect Ukraine to grant Italy an easy victory. As Ukrainian Andriy Shevchenko says, "Ukraine wants to win."

A convenient result for Italy will be a draw between France - Scotland.

If Italy lose against Ukraine, there are still hopes. Ukraine will have 16 points --- still 1 point behind Italy. Assuming there is a draw with France - Scotland, then an Italian victory means sharing the lead with France with 20 points. Thus, Italy will have to win the next match on October 17 with Scotland to guarantee the pass.

Yet, I agree with Del Piero, it is fundamental for Italy to win against Ukraine and not relying on the results of others for qualification.
