EURO 2008 Qualifiers - France, Inter at odds over Vieira's status

MILAN, Italy (AP) - France is counting on its captain Patrick Vieira to play against Italy on Saturday despite a thigh injury, although his Inter Milan club maintains he is not ready.

"In the last week Patrick has only done physiotherapy and athletic work without touching the ball," Inter's head athletic trainer Ivan Carminati was quoted as saying in Wednesday's Gazzetta dello Sport.

Vieira sat out Inter's first two matches of the Serie A season after getting injured in France's friendly with Slovakia last month.

France coach Raymond Domenech said Tuesday that Vieira's situation was "evolving every day" and that he was "optimistic" the midfielder would be ready for the European Championship qualifier.

"If Patrick gives me an hour at the level he did against Slovakia, that suits me," Domenech said.

Meanwhile, Italy could be at odds with Bayern Munich if Luca Toni plays for the Azzurri.

Toni hurt his right thigh while playing for Bayern Munich on Aug. 25 and sat out Bayern's 1-1 draw with Hamburger SV on Sunday.

Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said that a player is not usually called up for national team duty if he has not played his last club match.

Toni was called up, although Italy coach Roberto Donadoni  has listed him as doubtful for Saturday's rematch of the World Cup final. Toni seems more likely to play against Ukraine next week.
