MILAN - Milan are once again involved in the European Supercup in autumn 1990. This time it's an Italian derby, the first, but it will not be the only one. Facing the Rossoneri are Sampdoria, who had beaten Anderlecht on 9 May 1990 in Goteborg, by a score of 2-1, following extra time.
The first leg is played at Marassi on 10 October 1990: three days before, under the watchful eye of Pelé who was present on the stands, Milan beat Claudio Ranieri's Cagliari thanks to a brace by Marco Van Basten at San Siro. In the league, after five matches, the Rossoneri had managed four victories and a draw.
FIRST LEG STATS
SAMPDORIA-MILAN 1-1
Goalscorers: Mikhaijlichenko 31', Evani 41'
Sampdoria: Pagliuca; Mannini, Invernizzi; Pari, Lanna, Pellegrini; Mikhaijlichenko, Lombardo, Branca, Mancini, Dossena. Coach: Boskov.
Milan: Pazzagli; Tassotti, Costacurta; Gaudenzi, F.Galli, Baresi; Donadoni (Rijkaard 59'), Ancelotti, Massaro, Gullit, Evani (Stroppa 71'). Coach: Sacchi.
The return leg arrives 40 days later. But the atmosphere has already changed. Sacchi's team comes to Bologna (not at San Siro because of the many bumps on the pitch that make it almost impossible to play) on the back of a derby defeat (without the suspended Ancelotti) and a last-minute draw, thanks to Maldini, in Turin against the Granata (Torino): these results had caused some controversy. But the second leg of the European Supercup puts things in order again, despite the suspension of Van Basten (four matchdays after reacting on defender Plovie at Bruges in the Champions Cup), who was substituted by Condor Agostini.
SECOND LEG STATS
